The Microsoft account login server has detected too many repeated authentication attempts. Please wait a moment and try again. HOW LONG IS THAT MOMENT?

Today I received an email from Microsoft saying

Security alert
We think that someone else might have accessed the Microsoft account ed**___@___.___. When this happens, we require you to verify your identity with a security challenge and then change your password the next time you sign in.

I've changed logged in, went through the security checks, and I've changed my password, but now when I try to log in, it tells me

Something went wrong and we can't sign you in at the moment. Please try again later. The Microsoft account login server has detected too many repeated authentication attempts. Please wait a moment and try again.

I'm on a Mac, and I can't access it through the Mail app, nor through a web browser. I've cleared the cache, I've restarted both the app and the browsers and the computer, I've tried different browsers, as well as Incongito Window mode, with no luck. It works on my phone Outlook app, though. But I can't access my emails on my computer?

Any ideas? How long do I have to wait to try it again? I've allowed an hour to pass and I'm still experiencing the same issue.

Thanks.

24 hours doesn't do the trick. Still get same message. When I look at "Recent Activity" I see attempted logins from all over the world, about one every hour.

I have 2-factor and changed my password.

    Help!

    BUMP.

Using a privacy oriented ungoogled chromium browser & allowing to save data for: m365.clould.microsoft is DEFINITELY one fundamental, still will need to allow cookies for most of their domains.

    DO NOT NEED:

Embedded content, Picture in picture, Pop-ups and redirects, Protected content IDs, Insecure content, Auto-verify or other site/content settings besides abovementioned.

    • Also, NO NEED to wait XX time to actually access(nor change IP), just delete cookies, keep site settings & retry.

    Note:

Sometimes their wack redirections wont allow you to reach the actual outlook, so ideally keep the following bookmarks:

    Outlook

I have experienced this issue on a few occasions. I believe it to be a Google Chrome issue.

Accessing from my mobile device works.

Accessing from Chrome's Incognito mode works.

Browser is updated. Have the latest Windows Update installed. Same issue.

Windows machine was not rebooted for some time and performed a soft reboot and a hard reboot - same issue.

Have tried turning off and on NordVPN - same issue.

    Just installed 2025-02 .NET 8.0.13 Update for x64 Client (KB5052978) - testing.

Thank you, that weirdly did the trick.

I am using Opera GX and this happens to me from time to time. I had taken to either opening Outlook in a private tab (which works) or opening it in Edge (which also works). I even opened a ticket with Opera but it started working again before the ticket got any traction. Bizarre. I have MFA turned on, etc. etc.

Someone told me this quick and weird fix, but it works. Click on any email, click on 'Reply All', then sign out, and sign in again. No idea why, but it fixes this glitch which I've had a couple of times now. I hope this helps someone else as it took me a while to find this rather odd fix!
