I think (possibly) I've made my decision to go with the New Dell Inspiron Compact Destop i3910! I purchased it for $499 at Costco (I have until January to return it, if I change my mind). It does come with windows 11. Sooooo, I am still wonder if I should try to update my current Dell Inspiron i660 from Windows 7 to Windows 10... You gave me a link a while back for a free download. Maybe I should check that out before having to buy a new printer and inks, and another version of Office. ( I currently have Office 2010, which I believe is not compatible with Windows 11, but, it supposedly would be compatible if I update my current Dell to Windows 10.)

Sorry for driving you crazy! I don't even know if my old Dell would work well with an update to Windows 10! WOULD IT?

If I do change computers to the NEW one, I would buy a printer for $79.99 at Staples, and Inks are about $30 for a black and color together. The Microsoft Office Student/Home version is $149 approx. -- It's getting pricey for everything.

I am inclined, like you, to move forward and SET UP THE NEW COMPUTER. I don't like change, and worry if even my old speakers from Logitech will work!

Forgive me for not going through this entire thread before posting this response but time is kinda limited today so going to just make some general comments in the meantime

If this were me having to do things - here's the way I'd go about it

#1 - Just take your time this month (before Jan) to set up the new computer and see how things go. Leave everything else as is until you're done with this wask

#2 - As for upgrading your W7 to W10, one thing that jumps out at me is that if there was a printer driver for Win 10 that works, I'd be really surprised if it didn't work on Win 11 - what is the printer model involved

#3 - Re: Office '2010, would try and install it on your WIn 11 machine if you still have the product key for it and see if it activates. What you you won't be able to do with Outlook '2010 (if you were going to use it) is that you would not be able to use it with an Outlook.com based account (@Outlook @Hotmail @Live @MSN). Office Home & Student doesn't come with Outlook

#4 - In case you're not aware, you can use the free online Office apps for Word, Excel, Powerpoint which may serve your purpose and if it does, save you some money

Regarding trying to update to Windows 10 on my old Dell.... It came with Windows 7 already installed. I haven't yet looked in the back of it to see if the "license key" is there. I may need to look up some old paperwork. I still have my Service Tag, and the Express Service Code. I've had this Desktop model since March 2014!

I didn't continue with the sign up, because I thought there would be a "catch" of some sort - like, 30 days free trial! I really want to have the software on my computer, like I do now.

I planned to get the new printer today, and inks, but, I decided that I would see whether the old Canon would work with new computer. Also, will try and see, when the time comes, if the old Office 2010 disk (which I still have the license key) will work with new computer. From my research, it looks like, from what I read, Canon discloses my Canon printer isn't compatible, and Microsoft discloses Office 2010 isn't compatible with Windows 11. But, I can always try, right? I really only use Word and Excel. I never even set up Outlook from Office 2010!

I also like the idea you gave me a while back on how to make the new Windows 11, (if I continue with trying the new computer), look like my old Windows 7! I think that would help me tremendously. I didn't go to the site yet, I'll need to check out how their downloaded programs work, and what the fees are (monthly, yearly, etc).

There's no catch - just need a Microsoft Account to use the free online Office apps. Should try it just to see how you like it

Word of advice - never buy something because you "think" you may need it. It's all easy enough to check first. Mind you, this comes from a person who buys stuff because I'm in the mood for a new toy with lots of unused stuff sitting idly in my toybox LOL

As for the printer, first place to check is on the vendors site for what printer drivers are available. If you see something for Win 10 but not Win 11, would confirm with them if the W10 driver will or will not work (unless you want a new toy 😊)

As for Office '2010 - all I can tell you is that I installed it on a Win 11 system, and it works just fine - even Outlook if I don't bother with Outlook.com / Exchange accounts.

To summarize this, best way to start is to dive in and take it one step at a time - can always ask questions if you run into a snag along the way - that's what we're here for

Hi! Thanks for writing back a response so quick! Now, I can go to sleep tonight feeling a lot better about things - you've been able to calm me down, and have given me enough green lights for me to actually try the new computer. I won't purchase the printer yet - I will check with the vendor about the drivers available for my old Canon iP2600. Cross your fingers that they have a driver that will show up - and if it's a driver for windows 10, I will reach out to them in their chat, or whatever they use for people like me to ask questions. Maybe they have a "forum" like Microsoft! And, it's very very encouraging that you've been able to install Office 2010 on your Dell that has Windows 11. Very encouraging indeed!

That's it for now -- even though I've been trying to figure out how to migrate bookmarks and passwords from my emails to the new computer. I've made account profiles with usernames and passwords for Firefox, and Chrome. I'm hoping that when I download those browsers using my account profile username and password, that the Dell will let me log in with my email username and password, and all my bookmarks, and passwords with be there! HONESTLY, I don't think that's really how it works - it would be too easy that way! In the meantime, I have made a list of all sites, usernames, and passwords for all my bookmarks on both Firefox, and Chrome - just in case my easy way of migrating stuff doesn't work!
