Today Nov 11, 2022 I received an email from *** Email address is removed for privacy *** with the heading Disabling TLS 1.0/1l1 for POP3 and IMAP4 on December 01, 2022. Is this real or spam?

I checked to see if I already had Service Pack 1 on my Windows 7, and I do have it.

I checked the Update I would need to do from the catalog.update.microsoft.com/search site. I found two available to do - both named: KB3140245. The first one I tried, Update for Windows 7 for x64 based systems, I already had on my computer. The 2nd one was an Update for Windows 7. I downloaded this one, and the message came up that says "upate is not applicable to my computer." Weird, huh?

Then I thought, maybe I needed to do Run the EASY FIX for the registry. So, I did that, and it was successful. With the FIX in, I thought maybe now, I could try and redownload the Update for Windows 7 (the one that wasn't applicable) but, it again came up ad "Update is not applicable to my computer."

So, I kept poking around on the Microsoft site. Because the last paragraph of the email I got from Microsoft was about "What if I cannot update/upgrade? The answer was that Legacy clients must be configured to either pop-legacy.office365.com for POP3 OR imap-legacy.office365.com for IMAP4.

I did find an article entitled: Opt into the Exchange Online endpoint for legacy TLS clients using SMTP AUTH.

I read the article. And, tried to digest it. It's about configuring settings by opting in the new EAC or by using Exchange Online PowerShell. So, I am lost. Really lost. I don't think this is going to be an easy peasy fix for me. It involves running commands, which of course I have no clue how to do.

I'm totally out of my comfort zone. This is probably all in your wheelhouse, but, it's not in mine!

Do you have any recommendations/suggestions, on where I can find actual instructions on how to do this?

If you've applied the registry fix, you've done what you needed to do - all done so you can rest easy and enjoy the evening 😊

Best advice - don't get caught up in all the weeds. The fact that something didn't work as per what you described, just means that the particular item was not applicable - nothing to worry about.

The problem with having to provide technical articles is that if technical minutia is not provided, the technically oriented folks will complain about lack of information. However, the problem is that the very same information can confuse the living daylights out of non-technical types. Kinda like a car mechanic trying to explain all the salient details about how the transmission works to me when all I want to do is drive away in a car that works.

I sure hope your're right about just running the "Easy Fix" ... I agree with you about all the technical minutia, I am overloaded with how to configure or overcome what has been disabled. I've even found Microsoft info on how to Opt in to the Exchange Online endpoint for Legacy TLS clients using SMTP Auth. I'm beginning to think I need to do that somehow. It's never going to end!

The letter I got from Microsoft does say that I (and a bunch of other people like me) have until Dec 1, 2022. So, if in a little more than 2 weeks, I find that I cannot access my email on my desktop that runs Office 7, I will have to get an professional to keep me from having a panic attack and anxiety. Hopefully, the computer repair guys/gals around here, will know about this Microsoft issue, and how to remedy it! Crossing my fingers!

One thing I'm still confused about, is that one of my hotmail accounts didn't get the warning email from Microsoft. The email that got the letter, I know uses IMAP on my iPhone. I'm really praying that my phone won't have an issue accessing my email account!

If by "Office 7" you are referring to Office '2007, then the short answer to that is that you will need to upgrade Outlook since Outlook ' 2007 can no longer be used to access any Outlook.com accounts. That's explained in the following article but it can all be condensed to what I have just stated

a) be aware that new versions of Office aren't supported on Windows 7

b) if you don't want to upgrade Outlook, you may want to consider an <email client> like "emClient" - free if you don't have more than 2 email accounts

Why? The default for an Outlook.com account is "Exchange" which is the way it should be configured unless you have a very serious reason to configure it as IMAP and I can't think of what reason would be. Just need to remove the account and re-add it by just entering the email address / password for the account. This is assuming that you are using a reasonable current version of IOS and the Outlook mobile app is up-to-date. I just use an iPad and not an iPhone in terms of IOS.

Honestly, can't answer the question. I have multiple Outlook.com accounts and only one so far as received the notice but I haven't gone through to see how each of the accounts have been configured on my test systems. I don't use Outlook.com email accounts for anything other than for testing purposes

#1 Good to hear that I was totally off track on thinking if I was unable to update/upgrade, that I could do what Microsoft wrote --"we provide an opt-in endpoint for you to continue connecting with TLS 1.0/1.1. " That's how I ended up with the Microsoft article on "Opt in to the Exchange Online endpoint for legacy TLS clients using SMTP AUTH. Phew, I dodged WWIII on that one!

#2 I had written that "if in a little more than 2 weeks, if I find I cannot access my email, etc." __ I meant I have a WINDOWS 7 (with Service Pack 1) running on my desktop. I actually have MICROSOFT OFFICE 10 on my Dell Computer. SORRY, I apologize for writing Office 7. I told you, I am an idiot! I just meant to say if on Dec 1, my access to my email isn't working on my desktop, that I would seek professional help..and cross my fingers someone could fix it!

I use Outlook.live.com/mail as the address on my browser to access my email accounts - one account I access on Firefox, and the other one on Chrome. And, I do like your idea of doing the incognito way of staying private. So, I guess I am using Outlook.

#3 On my iPhone, when I look at settings, - mail - and then look at the setup for the name of one of my email accounts, it shows OUTLOOK about the account name, and it only shows advanced settings that use SSL. When I check the other account on my phone by going to settings - mail, I find that above the name of the account it says IMAP... it then has in its INCOMING MAIL SERVER settings Host Name: imap-mail.outlook.com. Outgoing MAIL SERVER: SMTP smtp-mail.outlook.com. Also PRIMARY SERVER smtp-mail.outlook.com as ON -- Use SSL is ON, and it's Server Port 587....

I have no idea why the first hotmail account actually shows OUTLOOK above the hotmail account name. And the other hotmail account shows IMAP ACCOUNT INFORMATION written above the hotmail account name

I believe I had set up the iphone with both email accounts the same way. Not sure why the SMPT is the mail server with IMAP for one of the accounts.

Maybe I need to call Apple, or Verizon, and ask them how to delete that account, and re add it back? I am using IOS 15.6.1 with my iphone is an 8. Not the newest phone, and I think I'm behind on doing another update, but the operating system isn't too far behind the most recent update.

You mention an OUTLOOK mobile app. I don't get my mail on my phone by going to an app. I just go to the little mail icon on the phone's screen. Maybe I should have an OUTLOOK app? I never knew there was one!

Maybe I'll try what you said. I can delete the troubling hotmail account (the one that got the Microsoft letter about Disabling TLS etc) that shows IMAP, and try to add it back onto my phone, and see what happens!

I just went on my iphone, and went through the the motions to "add" an email account. Choices are iCloud, Microsoft Exchange, Google, Yahoo, Aol, and Outlook.com. I've looked at some youtube videos and every time someone uses the Outlook.com choice to add a hotmail.com account, the name hotmail in the email address changes to outlook.com. Then they start proposing using an alias through Microsoft. Not sure how to do that either. Why does everything have to be so difficult for ME to understand! Since you mentioned "Exchange," I'm curious to try that one, to see if it will allow me to keep the hotmail.com address. I just don't want to delete the email account, without actually knowing that I'll be able to keep the hotmail.com name!

#4 I'm beginning to think that the reason only one email got the Microsoft notice, is because it was the account that uses IMAP on my phone. I have no clue how the access works on the DESKTOP because I am using the same Outlook.live.com/mail website for both accounts.

Now I have made an absolute fool of myself, making all kinds of typos while trying to explain what I've done, what I'm using, and what I'm going to try and do. I really do apologize for driving you crazy with my questions, and uneducated guesses of what to do! I wish I had half the brain you do!
