Today Nov 11, 2022 I received an email from *** Email address is removed for privacy *** with the heading Disabling TLS 1.0/1l1 for POP3 and IMAP4 on December 01, 2022. Is this real or spam?

I received an email that read: Starting on December 01, 2022, Office 365 will begin retiring Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.0 and 1.1 for POP3 and IMAP4. TLS is a standard protocol used to provide secure web communications for POP3 and IMAP4. Pop3 and IMAP4 are the client/server protocols for receiving emails. We will enforce TS 1.2 moving forward to provide enhanced encryption and help ensure your emails are received more securely. We have already disabled TLS 1.0 and 1.1 for most Microsoft 365 services in the worldwide environment.

WHEN THIS WILL HAPPEN - December 01, 2022

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO? Our records show that your email account has reently been accessed with POP#/IMAP4 through TLS 1.0 or 1.1. POP3 and IMAP4 will not be able to receive emails with POP3/IMAP4 protocol after that. To continue accessing your email accoutn using POP3 or IMAP4, please upgrade/update your client support TLS1.2 Your emails will not be removed, but you cannot access them without upgrading your client. I do not have Office 365. I have an old hotmail account, that I access through Windows on a desktop computer, and also on my Apple phone. I'm at a loss of what I should do. The letter I got sent today to my email account seems to think that I have Office 365, but I don't. Is there anyone out there that can even tell me if this is a true Microsoft email that I received? And, is there a phone number or an email address that I can write to, so that I can get easy directions, or instructions on how I can continue to access my hotmail account after December 1, 2022? Thank you

    Just for the record, I'm also a retired senior not that it matters any. As a comparison, "guys" are supposed to know about everything "car" related. Suffice it to say, in that regard my major achievement was/is the rank of "major clutz extraordinare" when it came to "fixing" anything, that's why mechanics were created- it's all relative <g>

    But on a serious note - answers to your questions

    #1 - Re: the update

    Since you're not sure of what has been installed, would first do the Windows update and then do the stand-alone package. It won't hurt anything to do both, If the update is already installed after the Windows Update, the worst that's going to happen is that you'll get an error message to that effect.

    #2 - Re: registry backup

    What I'm about to say may be considered heresy by somebut I wouldn't be all that concerned about it if you use the <Easy Fix> method which is what I would recommend

    Hello again Karl...

    I went to the link you gave me, and I read and read and read all the paragraphs!

    I read that Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 is a prerequisite -- I'm guessing I did that a long time ago. I can't remember! There is also two methods for this process. Method 1 is to to a Windows Update, and Method 2 is to do a "stand alone package" available at the Microsoft Catalog website. What would you recommend would be the correct method for me?

    I also am confused about "registry information" -- to apply the update, the Default Secure Protocols Registry subkey must be added. There is a manual way, or use what they call an "Easy Fix" link, that looks like a link to a Microsoft Support Update. It's totally confusing to me.

    Also, am I suppose to back up the Registry before modifying it? When I looked on Microsoft how to do that, there was only instructions for Windows 8.1, Windows 10, and Windows 11.

    See what I mean, when I say I'm an idiot. I wish that there was a Update Instruction List, with what to do, and in what order. I'm completely lost! I think I'm going to work on this again tomorrow. My head right now is spinning toward a migraine!

    Nothing can be further from the truth - everything is easy once you know the answer, don't care how much experience a person has. I can tell you some humorous stories about some things I've gone through

    Since you're on Win7 - definitely would suggest updating TLS using the link I provided in my previous response which should resolve things for you

    On an unrelated note, just as a FYI, i terms of accessing both accounts, you may want to consider using a private (incognito) session in Chrome (or Firefox if that's what you prefer)

    Hello Karl! Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions!... here are my answers to you:

    1. I have a desktop Dell operating Windows 7
    2. I am connecting to my hotmail accounts by going to the outlook.live.com website for both of my hotmail accounts. I actually use firefox to go to one of the accounts, and chrome to go to the other hotmail account. And, of course I use my Apple iphone to also get my email.

    It's strange that I only got one of these Microsoft emails to just one of my hotmail accounts. My other hotmail account didn't receive one. Maybe it takes a few days before Microsoft can get all their support letters out!

    I have no idea if I AM A LEGACY CLIENT - I don't even know what that means! I have had both my hotmail accounts for at least 20 years!

    I have made a restore point on this desktop just in case I mess something up by trying to download an update to my system.

    If I am unable to update/upgrade, the Microsoft letter says: If you cannot update/upgrade your "legacy client" we provide an opt-in endpoint for you to continue connecting with TLS 1.0/1.1 .. this email said I could be configured to imap-legacy.office365.com for IMAP4. or pop-legacy.office365.com for POP3. Which I think is the protocol I use is IMAP. Not sure if it's IMAP 4. To be honest, I'm not sure about anything!

    I also wasn't sure if anything needed to be deleted off my system, before I download an update?

    I'm an idiot, and appreciate any technical advise can give me! I haven't tried to update to you download link yet.

    That is definitely a legitimate Microsoft email - it is also not specific to Office 365. It has to do with how you are accessing the Hotmail account

    #1 - What operating system are you using? If Win7, the problem would be resolved by applying the following

    Update to enable TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 as default secure protocols in WinHTTP in Windows https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/update-to-enable-tls-1-1-and-tls-1-2-as-default-secure-protocols-in-winhttp-in-windows-c4bd73d2-31d7-761e-0178-11268bb10392

    #2 - What email program are you using on your computer to access this account?

    The bottom of the email message you received, contains the following

    What if I cannot update/upgrade?

    If you cannot update/upgrade your legacy client, we provide an opt-in endpoint for you to continue connecting with TLS 1.0/1.1. Your legacy clients must be configured to pop-legacy.office365.com for POP3 and imap-legacy.office365.com for IMAP4. Using legacy versions of TLS is not as secure as TLS 1.2, however, so we recommend you update and use TLS 1.2.

    This isn't anything that would impact your phone

    As for "And, is there a phone number or an email address that I can write to", unfortunately the answer is" No. There is no phone or email support for Outlook.com based email accounts (@Outlook @Hotmail @Live @MSN)
