Today Nov 11, 2022 I received an email from *** Email address is removed for privacy *** with the heading Disabling TLS 1.0/1l1 for POP3 and IMAP4 on December 01, 2022. Is this real or spam?

I received an email that read: Starting on December 01, 2022, Office 365 will begin retiring Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.0 and 1.1 for POP3 and IMAP4. TLS is a standard protocol used to provide secure web communications for POP3 and IMAP4. Pop3 and IMAP4 are the client/server protocols for receiving emails. We will enforce TS 1.2 moving forward to provide enhanced encryption and help ensure your emails are received more securely. We have already disabled TLS 1.0 and 1.1 for most Microsoft 365 services in the worldwide environment.

WHEN THIS WILL HAPPEN - December 01, 2022

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO? Our records show that your email account has reently been accessed with POP#/IMAP4 through TLS 1.0 or 1.1. POP3 and IMAP4 will not be able to receive emails with POP3/IMAP4 protocol after that. To continue accessing your email accoutn using POP3 or IMAP4, please upgrade/update your client support TLS1.2 Your emails will not be removed, but you cannot access them without upgrading your client. I do not have Office 365. I have an old hotmail account, that I access through Windows on a desktop computer, and also on my Apple phone. I'm at a loss of what I should do. The letter I got sent today to my email account seems to think that I have Office 365, but I don't. Is there anyone out there that can even tell me if this is a true Microsoft email that I received? And, is there a phone number or an email address that I can write to, so that I can get easy directions, or instructions on how I can continue to access my hotmail account after December 1, 2022? Thank you

    As for Win 10 - Win 11, there's no rush, Win10 will be around for quite a while yet. As far as W11 goes, just a matter of getting used to a new way of doing things but the first thing you need to make sure of is whether or not Win11 is supported on your computer. Since it's still running WIn7, it's probably likely that you will need new computer if you want to go to Win11.

    If you don't want to buy a new machine (if necessary), would definitely recommend upgrading the machine to WIn10

    Good news to report! I called Apple, and spoke with a technical support representative. I gave him the story about the Microsoft letter I got that said as of DEC 1, 2022, I wouldn't be able to access my hotmail.com account because of IMAP, blah blah blah. So, she stayed on the phone, while I deleted my email account, and added it! I was told to do it the Outlook way, as that's how my other hotmail account was configured - Success! ALL DONE!

    Now, we wait until Dec 1, to see if I can access my emails on both the Dell Desktop, and the iPhone! I won't feel out of the woods until I know for sure II can still get access to both accounts!

    I've also been trying to clean up my Desktop Dell. It is running Windows 7, but, I can see now, that it is an old, unsupported system, and I may have to get m head in the game and upgrade to Windows 11. VERY SCARY for me, but, I may just need to make a change so I can feel better about the future! I plan on being around a long time :)

    I'll keep you posted, if I do anything else, and no doubt will want your opinion before doing it!

    Nothing wrong with that - falls under "Measure twice - cut once". Something I'm a firm believer in 😊

    Thank you for giving me a link, just in case! You give me hope that I can figure things out - it means a lot that you have confidence in me! I'm feeling a lot better about this whole email situation. I'm still a scaredy cat when it comes to not wanting to make a mistake, and doing something that is irreversible, and damaging -- but, that's just my nature. I'm afraid of the unknown, and I don't like change! Hahahaha - But, I will give this my best shot!

    I'm not sure how long these threads will remain in this Microsoft Community Forum, but, I do want to update you when I do the next step!

    I will keep you in the loop how I do with changing the settings for the Hotmail email account on my phone! Hopefully, you will still be here!

    Unless you see the thread marked as "locked" which won't happen immediately, I've made sure that I'll see your response (am also a Volunteer Moderator for this forum)
