Today Nov 11, 2022 I received an email from *** Email address is removed for privacy *** with the heading Disabling TLS 1.0/1l1 for POP3 and IMAP4 on December 01, 2022. Is this real or spam?

I received an email that read: Starting on December 01, 2022, Office 365 will begin retiring Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.0 and 1.1 for POP3 and IMAP4. TLS is a standard protocol used to provide secure web communications for POP3 and IMAP4. Pop3 and IMAP4 are the client/server protocols for receiving emails. We will enforce TS 1.2 moving forward to provide enhanced encryption and help ensure your emails are received more securely. We have already disabled TLS 1.0 and 1.1 for most Microsoft 365 services in the worldwide environment.

WHEN THIS WILL HAPPEN - December 01, 2022

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO? Our records show that your email account has reently been accessed with POP#/IMAP4 through TLS 1.0 or 1.1. POP3 and IMAP4 will not be able to receive emails with POP3/IMAP4 protocol after that. To continue accessing your email accoutn using POP3 or IMAP4, please upgrade/update your client support TLS1.2 Your emails will not be removed, but you cannot access them without upgrading your client. I do not have Office 365. I have an old hotmail account, that I access through Windows on a desktop computer, and also on my Apple phone. I'm at a loss of what I should do. The letter I got sent today to my email account seems to think that I have Office 365, but I don't. Is there anyone out there that can even tell me if this is a true Microsoft email that I received? And, is there a phone number or an email address that I can write to, so that I can get easy directions, or instructions on how I can continue to access my hotmail account after December 1, 2022? Thank you

    I'm not sure how long these threads will remain in this Microsoft Community Forum, but, I do want to update you when I do the next step!

    I will keep you in the loop how I do with changing the settings for the Hotmail email account on my phone! Hopefully, you will still be here!

    If I cannot update/upgrade the phone - then I'm not sure what to do - the opt-in endpoint way for imap-legacy.office 365.com for IMAP4 seems to be an upgrade for the desktop computer, and not the phone.... SOOOOOO, it brings me back to

    Server settings are not device specific so if for some reason you can configure the account using Exchange, then those are the email account settings you need to use (but honestly, it would surprise me if that was necessary)

    #1 I am feeling lots better knowing I'm all set on my desktop computer for accessing the two different hotmail accounts!

    #2 For the phone, I think I will find out if I can just delete, and add, using either the Exchange, or Outlook way of doing it. I'll do some more looking around to make sure I can do it without needing to do the IMAP way.

    I agree, I don't know why both hotmail accounts didn't get added the same way - I'm begnning to think that when I got rid of my iphone 6s and bought the iphone 8, that they both came over the way they were done way back when! Too many years to think back! I don't even think the iphone' operating systems had the choices it does now for the automatic way of adding an email. I kind of remember having help, and adding all those server names, and incoming and outgoing ports, etc. I honestly can't remember how, and when I did it! I'm thinking the Verizon Store may have done it for me!

    #1 - If you're only accessing the account via your browser on your computer - you're all set and can sleep peacefully <g>

    #2 - I've never set up any Outlook.com account on a phone using IMAP so honestly will surmise that the message was related to that. Unless I've misunderstood you, if you have one of your accounts configured using Exchange, there should be no reason at all why the 2nd one can't be configured the same way but as you already pointed out, your settings on the phone for that account match the instructions in that email under the section "What if I cannot update/upgrade?"

    I'm just about done with all the mumbo jumbo -- I've got to start using that phrase! It's perfect! I love it!

    Last couple questions for tonight.... With the hotmail account, the one that is set up with IMAP on my phone, do I need to worry about being able to access that account, on my phone, on Dec. 1st?

    Was that the whole idea behind the microsoft letter - access to the account on the phone and NOT the desktop -- I'm glad you've said in #2 that as long as I use https://outlook.live.com/owa/ that I should be ok, even with them SCARING me with that letter.

    I'm beginning to feel a whole lot better :)
