Good news, I found the disk for the display monitor.. I hadn’t thought about what the connection will be from the the new Samsung Syncmaster ti the new Dell. You’re right - it could be a totally different connection. Same concern with the printer from 2009!

Bad news is my old Dell konked out earlier! It was getting longer and longer to warm up, and just a little while ago, it refused to turn on! I checked all the connections, and they were all good.

The 4th time I tried to turn it on, it took its regular long time to come to life. It turned on, but seemed to go to sleep rather quickly. Usually, I jiggle the mouse to wake it up, but the screen just stayed dark.. it didn’t wake back up.

I thought I was going to be able to take my time, and even bought a new display monitor so that I could keep the old Dell going, while I worked to set up the new one! Oh well. My plan didn’t pan out.

I think I may purchase the student version of Office. I’m afraid if I try to install the 2010 office disk, it may just cause more issues. There was lots of updates to Office 2010, and now that it’s no longer supported, I won’t be able to download any of the old updates. I know you said you were able to install office 2010 on your Dell running Windows 10 or 11, I can’t remember! But, I’m just a scaredy cat to try.

Since the Canon printer is no longer supported, with no drivers to download, I’ll need to get a printer.

Thanks for hanging in there with me! I’ve got the new computer, and I’ve got the new monitor.. next I’ll get a printer. For all I know I may even need speakers. I will probably need to get Office. If I use the free online Word and Excel, is there a way to use that feature to read what I have saved in my documents? Or is just for creating documents?

I’m getting anxiety just thinking about getting all the hardware and software to work together seamlessly. I’ll need to download Chrome, Firefox, and probably a free version of acrobat so I can read PDFs. Do you have a link you can send me for Acrobat?

I’ll keep you posted. Thank you for your encouragement and all the links you’ve sent! I’ll try to work on everything in a few days.. I need a break 🙃

I went to the link you gave me, and I read and read and read all the paragraphs!

I read that Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 is a prerequisite -- I'm guessing I did that a long time ago. I can't remember! There is also two methods for this process. Method 1 is to to a Windows Update, and Method 2 is to do a "stand alone package" available at the Microsoft Catalog website. What would you recommend would be the correct method for me?

I also am confused about "registry information" -- to apply the update, the Default Secure Protocols Registry subkey must be added. There is a manual way, or use what they call an "Easy Fix" link, that looks like a link to a Microsoft Support Update. It's totally confusing to me.

Also, am I suppose to back up the Registry before modifying it? When I looked on Microsoft how to do that, there was only instructions for Windows 8.1, Windows 10, and Windows 11.

See what I mean, when I say I'm an idiot. I wish that there was a Update Instruction List, with what to do, and in what order. I'm completely lost! I think I'm going to work on this again tomorrow. My head right now is spinning toward a migraine!

Since you're on Win7 - definitely would suggest updating TLS using the link I provided in my previous response which should resolve things for you

On an unrelated note, just as a FYI, i terms of accessing both accounts, you may want to consider using a private (incognito) session in Chrome (or Firefox if that's what you prefer)

Hello Karl! Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions!... here are my answers to you:

1. I have a desktop Dell operating Windows 7
2. I am connecting to my hotmail accounts by going to the outlook.live.com website for both of my hotmail accounts. I actually use firefox to go to one of the accounts, and chrome to go to the other hotmail account. And, of course I use my Apple iphone to also get my email.

It's strange that I only got one of these Microsoft emails to just one of my hotmail accounts. My other hotmail account didn't receive one. Maybe it takes a few days before Microsoft can get all their support letters out!

I have no idea if I AM A LEGACY CLIENT - I don't even know what that means! I have had both my hotmail accounts for at least 20 years!

I have made a restore point on this desktop just in case I mess something up by trying to download an update to my system.

If I am unable to update/upgrade, the Microsoft letter says: If you cannot update/upgrade your "legacy client" we provide an opt-in endpoint for you to continue connecting with TLS 1.0/1.1 .. this email said I could be configured to imap-legacy.office365.com for IMAP4. or pop-legacy.office365.com for POP3. Which I think is the protocol I use is IMAP. Not sure if it's IMAP 4. To be honest, I'm not sure about anything!

I also wasn't sure if anything needed to be deleted off my system, before I download an update?

I'm an idiot, and appreciate any technical advise can give me! I haven't tried to update to you download link yet.

That is definitely a legitimate Microsoft email - it is also not specific to Office 365. It has to do with how you are accessing the Hotmail account

#1 - What operating system are you using? If Win7, the problem would be resolved by applying the following

#2 - What email program are you using on your computer to access this account?
