Cannot manually sort folders with new Outlook

Given that this issue was raised July 2023 and the number of complaints in the thread, I would suggest we could all assume that Microsoft has no intention of addressing or fixing this issue.

For those who have been forced to go the the 'new' Outlook, I feel your pain and I am sorry for you. It is ridiculous that such a simple thing is not enabled and impacts on people workflow and efficiency. Personally, I have a choice and will continue to use the older version of outlook where manually sorting folders is still enabled.

Perhaps the big corporations using enterprise versions of this software should start rolling back to the previous version. If enough people stopped using apps and software that is unfit for use, then Microsoft may listen and would start to lift is game and actually serve its customer instead of treating us as commodities attached to $s.

Hi All

I'm loving the new Outlook, however I'm having real difficulty manually sorting my email folders.

Clicking & dragging the folder, only allows me to drop the folder INTO another folder, but doesn't allow me to drop it in between other folders (meaning I cannot re-arrange / sort the folders manually).

Right clicking the folder and clicking "Move", again only allows me to move the folder INTO another folder. There is no "move up or down" option unfortunately.

It is currently sorting my folders in alphabetical order, but I wish to change this. I have been through all the settings and cannot find anywhere I can manually sort my email folders.

Can anyone assist?

I've gone through this ENTIRE list of 13 pages with many of the items being simply a BUMP to reenforce how important this feature is to the community. It's been NEARLY A YEAR since this original question was submitted, yet what should be a relatively simple fix from M$ has still NOT BEEN FIXED / implemented. How long until "new Outlook" is the only Outlook and then we'll all really be #$%^&*! Get off your butts and get this fixed!! BUMP BUMP BUMP BUMP BUMP!!!

It makes absolutely NO sense that Microsoft would even put this product out to be used without this most basic functionality. Why not just get rid of folders altogether if the program doesn't allow users to organize their messages with them?? Clearly not well thought out there, Microsoft! That is why I always hesitate to "try" something new when those messages pop up. Usually end up going down a rabbit hole of their creation. Although the "new" Outlook is supposedly still in development, I would think bringing this to your attention months ago would have yielded an update by now.

For anyone who finds this, this is the best solution for us right now and it is absolutely infuriating to implement.

1.) Drag all of your desired folders into the inbox to force a group that is above the un-editable list of things like "notes" "conversation history" etc.2.) You will need to go through every single folder name and re-name them to include alpha-numerics to force outlook to sort them correctly.

If you happen to get some kind of "this is not possible" error message and the folder isn't sorting, you will need to hard restart outlook for it to behave correctly. (Essentially, make sure it's closed and not minimized to the system tray).

The moderator who originally responded to this thread claiming to use the "favorites" button to sort your folders to the top didn't account for subfolders being inaccessible. If you do it this way, your subfolders will still be reachable.

Microsoft if any of you see this, it is highly disappointing that you've ignored this problem for such a long time. You need to do better.

(And don't get me started on all the problems associated with your email rules system)

This is not a practical solution for people like myself, who has over 50+ folders, that I have to often re-organize.
