New Outlook won't let me add my outlook email account.

This worked for me.

Cause: My Mircosoft Live account had my Gmail account set as it's primary alias. Plus, I had already set up my Gmail account in the New Outlook. When I tried adding my Outlook email account, it was trying to add a Gmail address to New Outlook which already contained a Gmail address.

Solution: Log in to Microsoft at account.microsoft.com/profile and under the heading"Account info" click on "Edit Account Info". Then next to your outlook.com address click on "make primary". If you return to New Outlook and try to add your outlook email address, it should now work.

I have a btinternet.com mail account and New Outlook now displays my mail, contacts and events. So simple why do Microsoft not suggest this solution.

I had the same issue adding an M365 account. I have two accounts and one worked and the other didn't. Did the following and it solved the isssue:

• Close the new Outlook app.
• Click the Start menu and search for 'Command Prompt' > Right click the app and select 'Run as Administrator'.
• Now, please copy/paste the following command and hit the Enter key.

olk.exe --clearLocalState

i am having the same issue but its a new laptop running windows 11 - i have a subsription to 365 and to toggle back to an earlier version of Outlook is not an option.

Microsoft Outlook has always had one issue or another, related to accounts and users and what not. Microsoft doesn't want people to use email accounts from other providers such as Yahoo or Google, so they make it difficult to add emails accounts to Outlook. I have had to change permissions or security options in Yahoo or Google to be able to add those accounts into Outlook.

For that reason, I tried Yahoo's email platform and I found it quick and easy to do: I added my Hotmail, Yahoo and Google email accounts pretty straightforward, they are working very well and it is pretty much the same thing. I created a shortcut on my desktop with a link to my 'Email accounts' in Yahoo and it immediately takes me to to all my email accounts without the frills of Microsoft Outlook. Microsoft always blames the user and considers us inept rookies, when some of us have been using email for longer than Microsoft's millennial engineers have been alive.

However, I kept trying to add the other accounts to Outlook and in the end it accepted Yahoo and Google accounts, by sheer randomness. I didn't follow any of the advice provided in this forum, or in Microsoft's help pages, and it started working, so I assume it's just Microsoft making it difficult for people to add accounts from other providers, but in the end they get bored of playing silly games and let users add the accounts.
