No 'SAVE AS' option for attachments in new Outlook desktop app

Dear All,

Outlook offered to switch my application to the new Outlook version (there is a switch item below the window close button).

It looks like the in-browser version and works better than the former, but it has a missing option in the attachments drop-down menu, called 'save as'.

We get a lot of documents in our emails, which should be saved in different projects' locations on a local hard drive. The in-browser version and the former desktop app have this option but this new app does not.

How can I add this function back again?

Thank you in advance.

Regards,

István

    Dear Ms. Járási-Magos,

Could you share which version of Outlook you are using? Earlier, when the feature was working and then stopped, it seems that in one version it was working, but not in subsequent ones. Thanks!

When I get an attachment and it's a Microsoft file, I still just get the options for Preview, Edit in Browser, Edit in Word desktop app, and Save to OneDrive - BUT if I select Edit in Browser or in Edit in Word desktop app, and go to the Files tab, there's an option to Save As and I can then navigate on my computer to save it wherever I want. Yay!

Note that this only applies to Microsoft files. If I open a document with an attached .PDF, I get options to Preview and Save to OneDrive. If I select Save to OneDrive, it saves it SOMEWHERE but I can't tell it where I want it - BUT, after that, if I click on the attached file again and select View in OneDrive, the file opens in my browser and then I get an option to Download and I can save it wherever I like. If I select Preview at first, I can see the content and then I can select Save to OneDrive. Then, at the top of the Preview window, I get a chance to View in OneDrive. When I select that, the PDF opens in my browser and again, there's an option at the top of the window to Download. I can navigate and download it wherever I want.

Image files don't work as well - I tried a .jpg and a .png since I use those files a lot. I can select the attachment and get options to Preview or Save to OneDrive. If I select Save to OneDrive, it saves SOMEWHERE, but I can't choose where. When I click on the attachment in email again, I can View in OneDrive and then right-click-save to save it wherever I want. If I select Preview, it opens and gives me an option at the top of the screen to View in OneDrive. The file opens in the browser, and I can right-click-save and save it wherever I want.

I would REALLY like to be able to download these documents in one step by select them in the email and then click Download, or to drag and drop them into place. This is SO MANY EXTRA STEPS to do things I do in "old Outlook" in one step!!! It takes a lot more time between getting an email attachment and actually being able to DO MY JOB and edit these files.

As for the people at Microsoft actually working on this program, I'm sure they would LIKE to make this easier (the code must surely still be there from the old version!). They must be even more frustrated than we are!!! Here's hoping the bosses let them go ahead and fix this absolute MESS.

    Dear István HORVÁTH,

    Good day!

Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community. We are glad to assist.

As per your mentioned description about "No 'SAVE AS' option for attachments in new Outlook desktop app". after thorough research and testing I found that this particular setting only exists in the classic Outlook and is not yet available in New Outlook for Windows at this moment. I have tested on my side and reproduced your issue as shown in the attached screenshots.

    Image

The New Outlook is in a Preview state, and they are still working on the platform/foundation of the application itself. At this stage of the development, luckily restarting the client is very quick. As an alternative, you can switch back to "Classic" Outlook by turning New Outlook Off

However, thank you so much for bringing this to our attention, your suggestion is very helpful, and I believe it could make the use of New Outlook even better. Since New Outlook for Windows is still in active development, we will surely raise your concerns to our Product Development Team and hopefully this can be included in the future updates. In the meantime, we sincerely recommend you post your concern as an idea to our Outlook in-app feedback site Contact support and provide feedback within the new Outlook for Windows - Microsoft Support

Our Product Development Team are committed to enhancing the customer experience by continually examining suggestions to include in the design and development of future product upgrades based on your suggestions. Hopefully, your suggestion will help many users in the future.

Thank you for your time and understanding. For other questions, feel free to add your post in the Microsoft Community. Have a nice day!

    Dear Inema,

Could you enlighten us on this issue?

I see that I am not the only one affected by this problem.

Some respondents in this thread wrote that their company forced them to use this "preview" version. So this is not a choice for them, they have to work harder.

This is a very active thread, but Microsoft has not posted anything for a year. Why is that?

We are waiting for an answer from the developer.

    Regards,

    István
