Hi there,
I've used a live.com account for years, and have always logged in through my browser to view emails. Today, the page loaded with a thin red notification at the top stating "From February 1, you'll need more storage to send or receive email."
Obviously, for a start, it's 16 days past February 1 which is weird, and my email is all working fine at the moment.
Clicking on "Manage Storage" opens a window, which states that my total used for my Microsoft Storage (things backed up from a laptop I hardly use, didn't even realise that they were being backed up to be honest) is 7.8GB out of a 5GB limit. I tried unsyncing my desktop on said laptop, but all it's done is remove everything from that laptop, which is pretty frustrating as I just wanted to leave the data on there and just free up some space on the Microsoft storage.
Anyway, I'm not overly bothered by that by now, as I'm more worried about my emails not working. Separate to the Microsoft storage, it lists my "Email Storage", which is 7.6GB out of 15GB. Does anyone know why I'm getting notified that I'm in danger of losing my email and pushed to buy a ridiculously expensive price plan?

I am having the same problem with the same storage msg and in the process of giving out another email address it is a shock as been with hotmail for years and years.
Like many here, I was also confused about this new storage limit scheme by Microsoft. I have a few email accounts for various uses and 3 of them have the over storage limit message. I just ignored them and emails were working as usual, until today when people who tried to email me got their emails bounced back with "mailbox full" errors. I had no choice but to start archiving older emails.
The sheer stupidity of all this is that I am under my 15 GB limit, but attachments apparently are being counted towards your 5 GB OneDrive limit. I don't even use OneDrive!
Everyone should email Microsoft and complain.
Hi. I am about to send my third, and hopefully final, email to Microsoft UK, about this matter. So, because it's better to wait for a reply (if any) before explaining what I'm saying to them, I'll reply to you then, should be next week. But I'll say now that, on a scale of one to ten, my experience and view of, and respect for, Microsoft, is zero. In fact minus, it's that bad.
What you say is correct. What I can't accept is that Microsoft are effectively changing the way we use Hotmail in what is effectively an underhand, and therefore unethical, way. It may even be illegal, since, despite their armies of lawyers, they are presumably still capable of error, so I will attempt to find out about it if I can. What I find unacceptable is that users, many long-time, perhaps using Hotmail before some Microsoft staff were born, at being driven off Hotmail by unethical behaviour. Which I personally am not prepared to accept without finding out what is actually going on.
