I am using the free version of Outlook.com and followed the forums and help how to set up a GMail sync to Outlook.com.

However since two days I got this clicking on the "Sync Email" menu.

Even the X button on the upper right corner does not operates when being in this menu.

I tried this menu in browsers like Edge, Internet Explorer, Chrome, Opera.

All the same results.

Questions:

  1. can I use Gmail sync using free version of Outlook.com?
  2. do you know this

Scope: outlook.com email sync pane and functions.

    Reply to RMcManamy and ZdenekT

    According to Microsoft:

    • The sync email function has been permanently removed (without any explanation)
    • The sync pane had other functions as well, including setting the default FROM: address, and MS say this will be restored.

This information is from a support email I have from Microsoft.

I cannot guarantee the accuracy of this.

If they removed the email sync function, why are some of my email accounts still syncing?

The biggest problem now is that I cannot remove those old accounts. Some produce errors due to wrong passwords.

I want to completely remove the synced accounts, and switch to a more reliable email provider.

However, the option to remove the synced accounts is broken, producing a lot of errors. What a fail.

You are correct in pointing out that existing sync accounts still work - and apparently will continue to do so.

No new sync accounts will be supported; that feature is no longer available and that is official.

However the sync pane is not accessible at all so:

    • you cannot remove accounts you no longer want to sync
    • if account credentials (eg passwords) change, you cannot update them (and will get annoying messages that they do not work)
    • continuous unsuccessful login attempts from outlook.com may lock these accounts you cannot update
    • other features on the sync pane (eg default FROM: address) cannot be updated.

Microsoft told me in a support reply that this will be fixed, but that was a few weeks back.

However the sync feature, for new accounts, is gone.

This is exactly my problem. I've switched to the other account as my primary and want to (as much as possible) stop using Outlook, but now I can't get in and remove the zombie! (so I keep getting the "we can't connect please fix it" emails from Outlook because I changed the password on my other account ...)
