I am using the free version of Outlook.com and followed the forums and help how to set up a GMail sync to Outlook.com.

However since two days I got this clicking on the "Sync Email" menu.

Even the X button on the upper right corner does not operates when being in this menu.

I tried this menu in browsers like Edge, Internet Explorer, Chrome, Opera.

All the same results.

Questions:

  1. can I use Gmail sync using free version of Outlook.com?
  2. do you know this

    Hello Mihály Barosi!

Welcome to the Microsoft Office Community Forum. Thank you for sharing your concern with us today and we hope that all is well.

I totally understand that you have concern about your Outlook.com wherein the sync email option is blank. Let's us check on this together and sort this out. Rest assured, I will do anything that I can to assist you with your concern.

Based on your description, the reason why your sync email option is blank might be because there's a problem on the server. You may observe the behavior by trying again after 24 hours or by using other network for the internet.

    Now here's my to answer your questions;

With synchronizing your Gmail to Outlook.com, this is the same with connected accounts on Outlook.com, this option is no longer available on Outlook.com. Microsoft has removed this option since May 10, 2021. In order for you to sync your Gmail account to Outlook is you will need to use the Outlook mail application to access you emails from Gmail. Please refer to this article here for more information. Add your other email accounts to Outlook.com (microsoft.com)

Hope it helps. I look forward to your response.

    Sincerely,

You first replied on the 15th February 2022. It is now 4 March 2022 and we - the community still havent received a reply/fix/solution from you or Microsoft. In your reply you state:

'I totally understand that you have concern about your Outlook.com wherein the sync email option is blank. Let's us check on this together and sort this out. Rest assured, I will do anything that I can to assist you with your concern.'

    • Can I be so bold as to ask what has been done about this issue?
    • Has it been escalated to higher ranked support engineers?
    • Will it be fixed or do we have to find an alternative email client?

I await for your reply/response with bated breath.

    Thank you

Thanks for the solution. Though I'm not going to try it cause I understand what it does already.

It's good to know it is a client-side error caused by a missing feature from the server. So it should be an easy fix which nobody in Microsoft bother to fix. :D

I wrote a post on Reddit with a workaround for this problem (i.e. the 'Sync email' settings panel failing to load). You can find my post here: https://old.reddit.com/r/gsuitelegacymigration/comments/t5843t/default_from_in_microsoft_365/hz68yfx/?context=3.

I realize this might be a bit too complicated for most, apologies for that, but it's the best I could do for now. It basically boils down to Outlook.com returning a server error (HTTP status code 500) for one of the settings that used to be on the 'Sync email' settings panel, causing all of the other (mostly unrelated) settings on that panel to fail loading as well. By following the steps outlined above, we can essentially 'trick' the browser into believing that the server-side error never occurred, after which it will load all of the settings except for the one setting that was seemingly removed by Microsoft (which causes the server error). So this is basically a client-side error caused by a server-side error.

    Hope this helps! :)

Brilliant solution. Thank you. Exactly what I and most of us I presume want done!

Unfortunately, as you rightfully say, a bit too complicated for a lot of us, including me.

Nonetheless, I will try following instructions and see what happens.

Maybe there is somebody out there that can write a simple macro or batch file that would be easy to implement.

    Thanks once again.

    Stay safe

It is a very poor move from Microsoft.

As another poster has written, if the sync access to an account starts to fail, the Outlook.com will get constant messages to the Outlook.com email account warning of that failure, and these failures may result in the sync'd account being locked out.

I understand Microsoft can make changes and reduce the functionality of a free email account, but has it the right to inflict this on the user base?

I should add that Microsoft should have flagged this change with a simple advance warnig on the sync page indicating that this facility would not longer be accessible. Instead the nonsensical "Try again later" is still displayed though apparently the page will never be displayed again.
