I am using the free version of Outlook.com and followed the forums and help how to set up a GMail sync to Outlook.com.

However since two days I got this clicking on the "Sync Email" menu.

Even the X button on the upper right corner does not operates when being in this menu.

I tried this menu in browsers like Edge, Internet Explorer, Chrome, Opera.

All the same results.

Questions:

  1. can I use Gmail sync using free version of Outlook.com?
  2. do you know this

    Important update from Microsoft support:

"Thank you for your response. I understand how frustrating this must be for you but unfortunately there is no ETA as to when the issue will be fixed. We will let you know once a fix is released."

It is hard to understand how a massive corporation like Microsoft, with its huge IT resources, cannot fix this bug, which they they themselves introduced.

It makes me anxious about the future of Outlook.com as a viable free email service,

I see possible solutions for changing the default FROM: email address have been posted (though not referenced by Microsoft support).

I have not tried these yet.

Also, several posts raised the possibility of infringement of the Data Protection Act.

I am not an expert here, but the possibility of being locked out of a synced account after a password change there which you cannot replicate on Outlook.com, causing repeated unsuccessful POP3 login attempts, may be a breach of Data Protection Legislation, as the user is being denied access to their own data.

I have told MS I think it is a breach and intend to report them to the Data Protection Commission here.

There is no fix for you or me to apply. The fault lies with the outlook.com server.
Microsoft Support appears to be taking no interest in all complaints above.

My problem is the same, but opposite. Despite my "primary alias" as my personal domain, the message defaults to "@outlook.com" when composed on the web, and "outlook_numbers&******@outlook.com" when composed from a mobile device.

Doesn't work for me. So, let's conclude that experiences may differ.

For years I had my primary login at the outlook.com address, but my e-mail was setup with the from address set at my own domain.

This morning I changed my primary login to another outlook.com alias I already owned.

After waiting an hour and logging out and in again, the default from address for new messages is the one with my private domain. This is an outlook email setting that can only be changed in that Sync page, which is dead.
