My Outlook 2016 "Start Up Options menu" has no drop down submenu

I have Outlook 2016 on my home computer. Within the last few weeks, on reopening Outlook, I have received the message "Outlook closed while you had items open . Reopen these items from your last session ?".

I have tried to remove this function via File; Options; General; Start up options, but  my Start up options title does not have a drop down menu !

I have opened and reopened the Options menu, but to no avail. Nor is there an option to press on the heading "Start up options" which is located between Privacy Settings and Attachment options

I'm sure that I must have closed Outlook in the past without closing all items, but this message has only begun appearing within the last week.

Is there a fix?

    Hello Jason,

In response - no probs with registry etc as I'm not going there lol. M/soft tier 2 did the other day and setting appeared correct with it noted as 1 (as opposed to 0, or 2) at end of string.

    a) My own environment 2016 MS Outlook full version is: Version 2306 (Build 16529.20182 Click-to-Run)

    b) In the business external environment ('Cloud') the Version is Microsoft Outlook 2016 (16.0.5395.1000) MSO (16.0.5393.1000) 32-bit

This, b) as mentioned is fine with no pop-up occurring. However this version does, under > Startup, have one box to tick or untick, i.e. Make Outlook the default program for E-mail, Contacts, and Calendar. BUT like a) above-own environment (which doesn't have any option/drop down at all, including or like this one just mentioned under b) it has no other options shown under Start Up to:-

    • always open warning box to shut down previous etc unclosed - Registery 0 at end of string from memory, nor
    • only open warning if in fact something is left open, or of course - Registry 2 at end of string, again from memory, or vice versa.
    • never open pop up box etc which correctly following registry string does in fact show 1 under a) above.....but obviously doesnt work or do the trick!? for a) above.

Aside from Petes' work around of course by unticking the 'Store to Cloud' box under Options, General etc.

    Hope this makes sense.

    Cheers & Regards

    Terry

    Hi Terry,

I spoke too quickly this morning my time. After having Outlook closed for about an hour with the cloud storage option unticked when I opened Outlook the pop-up re-appeared but has only done so once.

The true author of the cloud storage settings option is Kevin Emmrich, and I thank him for providing the information.

Let's hope that a solution is posted soon!

    Pete

    Hi Jason,

    I'm using Outlook® 2021 MSO (Version 2306 Build 16.0.16529.20164) 64-bit.

    Trust this helps.

    Pete.

Well it's affecting more than just the 2016 Version as well..........! Rampant Updates lol! Gotta laugh, you'd cry.

Will let you know if the pop - up appears again Pete my end - in meantime have left it unticked....he says holding his breath!

    Hi Jason,

I have another aspect to the bug.

    System parameter: Office Home & Business 2016, Version 2306 (Build 16529.20182 Click-to-Run), OS W11 Version 22H2 Build 22621.1992.

I have removed Office 2016 from the system using the scrubing tool SetupProd_OffScrub and resinstalled it. Now the registry parameter 'ReopenWindowsOption' is there again and was set to '2' (always reopen). But the setting has no effect. If I close Outlook with mail windows open it will not reopen any further window after restart but itself. Setting the value to '0' (prompt to open) has no effect either. It seems to be ignored by Outlook.

The "Start Up Options" menu item still has no drop down submenu.

On another Office Home & Business 2016, Version 2306 (Build 16529.20182 Click-to-Run), installation on W10 (Version 22H2, Build 19045.3208) I got rid of the prompt by selecting 'no' once. Before that the Outlook main window opened twice together with the other windows, which was very annoying since both were on top of each other. The mentioned registry entry does not exist at this installation.

After a restart of the system I noticed on the W10 system that I got the prompt to reopen angain and when I select "Yes" previous windows had been reopened and outlook was started twice again. There were windows reopened which I had closed long before. Even if I close outlook with no further window open if selected "Yes" a mail of a previous session is reopned.

I look forward for a fix of the bug.

    Regards, Heimo
