My Outlook 2016 "Start Up Options menu" has no drop down submenu

I have Outlook 2016 on my home computer. Within the last few weeks, on reopening Outlook, I have received the message "Outlook closed while you had items open . Reopen these items from your last session ?".

I have tried to remove this function via File; Options; General; Start up options, but  my Start up options title does not have a drop down menu !

I have opened and reopened the Options menu, but to no avail. Nor is there an option to press on the heading "Start up options" which is located between Privacy Settings and Attachment options

I'm sure that I must have closed Outlook in the past without closing all items, but this message has only begun appearing within the last week.

Is there a fix?

    Good afternoon,

    And thanks for your messages.

I also found the Diane Poremsky page which illustrated how the Outlook “Start-up options” should look.

A Microsoft Community moderator suggested that I might be able the resolve the issue via:

    • Open Outlook.
    • Click on File > Options > Advanced.
    • Scroll down to the General section.
    • Check the box next to “Show start up in the folder pane”.
    • Click OK.

However, I discovered that the heading “General section” was not among the dozen commands available. I have yet to follow through the MS Community moderator suggestion that I now refer to: ~ “Repair an Office application ~ Microsoft Support”

I find that my version of Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2016, which was installed in November 2020, has the identifier number 16.0.16529.20154.

I cannot find any updates, but I have discovered an App for Microsoft 365 (Office) which was apparently installed on 8th June 2023 and consists of only 16.8mb. This is a mystery because I have not subscribed to Microsoft 365 and have no need for it.

I can see that many other people are experiencing the same issue and wonder if we will soon hear from Microsoft?

    Hello to you all.

I also have the same issue "Outlook closed while you had items open . Reopen these items from your last session ?".

This problem also has just started happening since the last Office update recently, and I also have no start up options visible to select from.

Hopefully MS will put out a fix for this bug soon.

    Pete

I too have been running Outlook 2016 for years! Only in the past week am I receiving the message "Outlook closed while you had items open. Reopen those items from last session?" On the Options, General screen there is nothing under start up options where this could be turned off. On the Options Advanced screen nothing at all reflected for start up options. Also found nothing when looking at Mail vs General option.

This is extremely annoying. When I ran the repair from the Microsoft site it was even worse. Downloaded Office 365 with warnings the trial would expire in xxx number of days. So I uninstalled 365.

How do I resolve the issue under Outlook 2016? Something like this should not show up out of the blue when nothing has changed? One forum I came across said you can't do any of this if you are accessing a server, which I am with Spectrum. Well that makes no sense either since I've had spectrum as my email server from even before I upgraded to 2016.

.... Just an FYI that other MS Outlook users with a perpetual (non-subscription) license are reporting the same problem in the 04-Jul-2023 thread Outlook MS Pro+ 2021 Start-up Options Disappeared in the AskWoody forum but no one posting there has found a solution yet ...

    Hi CSG-08:

User Drcard:)) just reported in post # 2571671 of that AskWoody thread that they were able to restore the dropdown list at File | Options | General | Start Up Options | When Outlook Opens: (i.e., the dropdown list that controls the appearance of the “Outlook closed while you had items open. Reopen those items from your last session?” prompt at startup) when they rolled their MS Office Home and Business 2019 C2R back to Version 2305 / Build 16501.20210.

That suggests that the Version 2306 / Build 16529.20154 (rel. 26-Jun-2023) update of perpetual editions of MS Office 2016 C2R and higher has a bug that removed this setting from File | Options | General | Start Up Options. I don't know if this bug also affects Outlook 365 in Microsoft 365.

I use MS Office Home and Business 2019 Click-to-Run (Current Channel release) and recently noticed that my Outlook 2019 setting(s) at File | Options | General | Start Up Options are blank ...

    Image

.. when they should look something like this. (Note: the image below was copied from Diane Poremsky [ M365 MVP ]'s 06-Apr-2021 post in How to enable the prompt "Outlook Closed while you had items open. Reopen those items from your last session?")

    Image

I performed a Quick Repair of my MS Office 2019 installation as instructed in the MS support article Repair an Office Application but that did not restore my missing Start Up Options settings. If I can't find a simple solution in the next day or two I'll run a Full Repair and will post back to let you know if that fixes the problem.

The only reason I noticed my Start Up Options are missing is that, like you, I began seeing the same “Outlook closed while you had items open . Reopen these items from your last session?" pop-ups about a week ago (perhaps when I was automatically updated to Version 2306 / Build 16529.20154 that was released on 26-Jun-2023) and began looking for the setting in Outlook 2019 at File | Options | General | Start Up Options that should allow me to stop this pop-up.
