My Outlook 2016 "Start Up Options menu" has no drop down submenu

I have Outlook 2016 on my home computer. Within the last few weeks, on reopening Outlook, I have received the message "Outlook closed while you had items open . Reopen these items from your last session ?".

I have tried to remove this function via File; Options; General; Start up options, but  my Start up options title does not have a drop down menu !

I have opened and reopened the Options menu, but to no avail. Nor is there an option to press on the heading "Start up options" which is located between Privacy Settings and Attachment options

I'm sure that I must have closed Outlook in the past without closing all items, but this message has only begun appearing within the last week.

Is there a fix?

I fear Microsoft will never repair it. In my case the register changes have solved the problem.

No This did not help. The third bullet below is not correct. There is no General section in Advanced. I wen to the General section as well and there is no option.

I even tried to do the repair/Modify which was the next option to no avail.

    • Open Outlook.
    • Click on File > Options > Advanced.
    • Scroll down to the General section.
    • Check the box next to “Show startup in the folder pane”.
    • Click OK.

I need this feature. This was and still is available but I just can't seem to get it.

... since the 2308 build/update the option to select or not for store settings to cloud has dissapeared from my MS Outlook 2016 (perpetual version) which I had unselected as the work round to stop the pop-up box appearing everytime you open Outlook. Still no pop-up which is great ...

    Hi Terry Larkin1:

I haven't had that section in the settings of my retail edition of MS Outlook 2019 for several versions, if I ever had it at all.

When I checked the settings of MS Outlook 2019 back in July 2023 (which was at Version 2306 / Build 16529.20154 at that time) I did not have a section at File | Options | General | Cloud Storage Options where I could could disable a check box labeled "Store my Outlook settings in the cloud", and my registry did not have a value named EnableCloudSettings at HKEY_CURRENT_USER | SOFTWARE | Microsoft | Office | 16.0 | Outlook | Preferences, so I was never able to test this workaround on my Win 10 laptop. See the images in my 13-Jul-2023 post on page 3 of in Michael Chesley Johnson's Keep Getting "Outlook closed while you had items open. Reopen items from last session?" Even Though It's Not True.

Hi Great White North and All,

Interesting since the 2308 build/update the option to select or not for store settings to cloud has dissapeared from my MS Outlook 2016 (perpetual version) which I had unselected as the work round to stop the pop-up box appearing everytime you open Outlook.

Still no pop-up which is great and of course still no drop down list under start up options.

    Cheers All

    Hi CSG-08:

Sadly, the release notes for the latest Version 2308 / Build 16731.20170 (rel. 28-Aug-2023) for Microsoft Office C2R users on the Current Channel have been posted at https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdates/current-channel#version-2308-august-28 and there's no mention of a fix for the "Outlook closed while you had items open. Reopen those items from your last session?” prompt or the missing setting at File | Options | General | Start Up Options.

Microsoft's background article Outlook Unexpectedly Prompts to Reopen Items From Your Last Session also hasn't been updated since 03-Aug-2023 and still states "The Outlook Team is investigating this issue. We will update this topic when the fix status is available" so it appears the bug fix isn't ready yet.
