Outlook keep resetting ribbon back to default after changes

In my Outlook (updated Office 365 ClickToRun with Exchange On-line) there are newer ribbon groups I don't have any use for.

New groups (OneNote, 1-click actions, My templates and Add-In) are in the Home- and Message-ribbons.

I've edited the ribbons but as soon I edit f.i. the Home ribbon, the groups are restored back in the Message ribbon. If I edit the Message ribbon, the groups are again restored in the Home ribbon.

I've tried resetting the ribbons and start all over again and I also made an Office repair but nothing helps. It looks like editing one of the ribbons toggles back the default in the other ribbon.

    I have a love-hate relationship with Microsoft, while I hate them for their arrogance in assuming that only they know what is best for the user in this case I cannot agree with your assertion that "Outlook365 is ancient, and hasn't had any significant UI improvement in years". I have been using Oulook for nearly 30 years, while admittedly the basic UI has not changed much (maybe becuase it "just works"), but it has always been evolving and there have indeed been many changes and additions (including to the UI); some of them I like and use, others I don't use and disable. Until recent years when the the marketing dept began to take precedence over developers, many of the changes were in response to user feedback.

    Nevertheless, the ever-changing ribbon really makes me angry because there is no way to disable it, somebody in marketing obviously clicked on the "Ignore User Feedback" box.

    Sadly the "New Outlook" is a junker! It reminds me of the "olden days" and the way Yahoo and AOL's first browser-based email platforms looked. I don't know if MS is going for retro or their Gen-Z developers just think they're creating something new....

    Like some of the other suggested workarounds this one seems to help somewhat (with the emphasis on "somewhat") but definitely does not prevent the sporadic ribbon changes. Just today my message ribbon suddenly showed 5 icons that I have repeatedly deleted (see attached jpg).

    Microsoft, I give up. You win (and **** you).

    It looks like you still have Quick Steps in your ribbon.

    I used the registry entry to get rid of Quick Steps (mentioned this thread, Page 2, half way down) AND I set those files mentioned earlier as read only (mentioned this thread, Page 3, top).

    After making those two changes, and customizing my ribbon again, my Outlook ribbons have not changed in a month.

    Unfortunately... This is a work computer on a huge network and I don't have permissions to access those kinds of files. I'm pretty much limited to in-app settings.

    Everyone has access to their own Local AppData folders. Otherwise, many programs will fail. Try pasting this into your File Explorer bar:

    %localappdata%\Microsoft\Office

    Not sure if this will help others, but my Outlook would keep bringing Quick Steps back.

    After I added this entry to the registry, my Ribbon changes stuck.

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Options\

    REG_DWORD: disablequickstepsgallery
