working with Outlook web interface on firefox; constant keyboard glitching while typing a message

Hi, I use the Outlook web interface on firefox. I keep running into a strange bug. I'll start typing an e-mail message, and all of a sudden, my keystrokes are interpreted as commands instead of text. For instance, I'll type a word with an "n" in it, like "and", and somehow after I type the "a", the interface starts grabbing keystrokes away from the text field, so when I hit "n", it creates a new message, and the "d" ends up going into the text field of this new message. It's very frustrating, because I can't type more than a couple of sentences before the message and interface get screwed up. I've seen this misbehavior for a while, through several updates of firefox. No other web app behaves this way. I've searched online, and I haven't found any mention of this bug. Has anyone else seen this? Any idea what's going on? Is it an Outlook bug? Firefox bug? Something in an extension? Help!

An IT tech at my employer sent Microsoft a bug report on this issue. An MS tech contacted me via e-mail for details. After sending them the details, the MS tech replied that they are not going to investigate this problem because it affects Firefox but not Edge. This is contrary to the fact that according to this page Firefox should be supported. So it looks like our only recourse is to use a different browser and gripe.

Thank you everyone for your massive patience.

First, I'd like to address the comment that "[Microsoft is] not going to investigate this problem because it affects Firefox but not Edge." This should not be the case, and I'd like to correct that piece of miscommunication here. I work directly with the teams involved in this issue and we've been trying to narrow down how the issue can be reproduced. There was quite a bit of difficulty reproducing the issue when the diagnosis was attempted (whether it was usage patterns, device specs, email settings, body content, or anything that was hindering the team's ability to reproduce the issue on-demand), and I'm extremely grateful for all the useful information shared in this thread, particularly from people who were able to consistently reproduce the problem and identify the likely root cause.

For the moment, while I beg for more patience, you should be able to work around the issue by using a different browser or by turning off "Text predictions". However, as we can all agree, this is not a long-term solution in the slightest. In fact, it's probably not even a medium-term solution, and I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and problems it has caused.

I do wish I had found this forum thread earlier, but now that a co-worker pointed me here, I will do my best to see the fixes through. Sorry, and thank you, and sorry once again.

Hi Philip, do you have an ETA on the rollout mentioned in your first bullet? This glitch is the worst part(s) of my day across all my interactions with any piece of software. It's so, so, so, so, infuriating and frustrating. Is there a % complete status/ETA you could provide so I can maintain hope?

Thanks for your patience; I've been taking a little time off. I just checked in with the team and we're increasing the rollout for the fix to the full worldwide population today.

In addition, with regards to "turning off keyboard shortcuts doing nothing", the team diagnosed and found that this should be fixed with a refresh of the browser page after turning off keyboard shortcuts.

Thanks all.

Many thanks for replying Philip. A few things seem broken here:

  • the ability to flag up an issue, there are dozens of responses above, but this forum doesn't appear to lead to any visible change.
  • maybe it did lead to change, but that wasn't communicated and the more people who piled onto this thread appeared to lead to less MS engagement, not more.
  • the ability to engage with Microsoft staff. Staff were engaged at the beginning of this thread, but soon disappeared

I had to go through my org to raise a ticket, this took weeks, the process built into the Outlook web app gave no feedback at all. There must be a better and more transparent way to deal with issues, maybe there is, and that's what the MS staff on this thread should have been helping us navigate. We're now in the the bizarre position that Mozilla seem to have been taking this more seriously than MS. When I wrote web apps and a browser toolkit changed I didn't ask the browser maker to debug my code.

Whilst I appreciate that turning off "Text predictions" makes things a little more stable, it isn't a fix. As others have mentioned, the issues are still there though, less frequent. I know I've lost at least one lead due to this issue, there might well have been others that I'm not aware of. If you could keep us all updated on the progress of this, that would be most appreciated.

To be fair, Philip literally just apologized and said that that despite appearances, this isn't what's happening (a monopoly negating our choices). It's a bug, it's hard to reproduce, it's at a huge company. I work at an employer with ~80k employees and despite us caring about complaints, issues, etc... there aren't enough people at any given time to just drop x and fix y. I'm grateful for the progress!

I have the same problem and it's driving me around the bend. Even after deactivating autocomplete and suggested replies, I still experience the behaviour. Extremely replicable while typing words like "problem" with the r dropping out 8 out of 10 times. As it's the only application that exhibits such behaviour, I'm going to point the finger at Outlook Web.
