I just tried to update my dell desktop to Office 365, and now when i try to open Outlook, it immediately shuts down. clicking the outlook icon brings up https://outlook.live.com/mail/inbox but i don't want that. I want my traditional outlook. Help?

in the "Type here to search" box on the Task Bar type > cmd   >choose run as an administrator.. paste the commands into Command Prompt box.

Hit the enter key on the keyboard after pasting each command line.

cd "C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\ClickToRun"

and then

officec2rclient.exe /update user updatetoversion=16.0.12827.20470

UPDATE:

Do nothing, wait.   See:

Microsoft is automatically propagating a fix.....  I am seeing it automatically patch some of my clients i had not fixed yet, that complained earlier..

    It's really weird.

Some of these are working well for some people and not for others.

I did indeed do what you suggested almost right off the bat.

I did not help a bit.

Nothing suggested so far has helped my Outlook work.

It just starts for a few seconds then disappears.

Creating a new profile does nothing.

    Repairing does nothing.

Doing the CMD suggestions has done nothing.

Uninstalling the updates applied today did nothing.

The only thing I have not yet tried is doing a full and complete UNINSTALL of Office 2019 Pro using the MS tool to do that.

Make sure there is nothing Office on my machine.. BUT

That means having to redo all of my custom settings for all the other Programs not to mention more than a few E-mail accounts in Outlook and more Data files than I care to think about.

I am hoping that the MS folks can fix this without having to do the aforementioned but glad what you tried worked for you.

Exactly the same for me. I've tried re-installing 365, running scans etc all to no avail. It seems like there are lots of users with the same problem all at the same time and complete 'radio silence' from Microsoft!!
