What shortcut might archive messages on outlook.live.com?

On several occasions, I have accidentally archived messages while typing them. Possibly sometimes while reviewing them. I have done this while typing a combination of keys. Lately, there is a prompt after it happens, and I can undo it. Previously, there wasn't. I have asked outlook support, but the person helping me does not believe me. He keeps insisting that it is E just because the references say so. However, I typed capital E multiple time in response e-mails, and it didn't do anything (thus debunking the reference). Also, it doesn't make sense that Microsoft would program a capital letter without any other key with it for a shortcut, when people might be typing it in e-mails. It could in fact, be in somebody's first name, so that doesn't make sense. I have given two reasons why it doesn't.

i am getting absolutely no help from Outlook support. I have told the person multiple times that I did not type capital E (besides typing it multiple times in the e-mail). These people also seem to think that unlinking my phone is the solution to everything. He knows that the e-mails keep getting archived by me typing on my computer' keyboard, but he wants me to unlink my phone to solve it. I sometimes feel like some of those people may just be searching for instructions to help people. Indeed, I have had a different problem that solved on its own after it was caused and fixed after an outlook update. Throughout troubleshooting, they also thought it would fix it by unsyncing my phone. That particular solution was given to me for three different issues, and for two of them, it was solved without doing so. The third one is this, but the factors involved prove it has nothing to do with my phone.

Please help if you have knowledge or experience in this issue. Archiving messages definitely has nothing to do with capital E.

I wonder if them wanting us to see animations is why I can’t view the site on my iPhone? I’m not trying to change the topic, but I am stuck on the loading animation on my browsers. I do notice how much of a lack of help I get from outlook support on my tickets, and they always act like I don’t know what I’m talking about. I can show screenshots and provide links to customer complaints about the issues happening (such as this one about the archiving of emails), and they will tell me to provide a psr recording when I didn’t know how it happened. If I provide the latest update about how it happens, there is no response, and it seems they suddenly changed the programming. Their lack of support is disconcerting. Yesterday, a team member called me and helped a little regarding one issue that was happening on multiple accounts, but told me it was impossible to happen on multiple accounts and I must be confused basically because he knew everything and is in charge of that department. i feel like I would prefer some option besides apple, Microsoft or google, that I could move all software to, but that is not an option.

I am among the many people having this same problem. I will be composing a new email, whether by clicking "New" or by replying to a message I just read, and Microsoft randomly interrupts my typing and archives the most recently viewed email in my inbox.

This is likelier to happen if the user actually navigates using the tab metaphor Microsoft has introduced. By this, notice I mean that when you create a new message, at the bottom of the screen, the message is being typed in a new "tab." The previously existing tab is usually Inbox.

If you tap on that Inbox (or equivalent) tab and then navigate to another folder/email (to check details of another email, whatever), after which you tap the new email composition tab again to resume typing your email, almost always (in my experience), Hotmail--cough, sorry, Outlook--will interrupt your typing and proudly let you know it's archived a message.

Of course, then you click undo and try again just to type your message in peace, or worse, navigate to see what was archived (from the Inbox tab), unarchive that email, and return to composition, when Microsoft will--again--physically interrupt your typing and randomly archive an email once more.

I've found a bit of a workaround, which is to highlight, say, the most recent word you were typing in the new email, tap Delete (Backspace on some keyboards), and then continue typing your message. Almost all the time after that, Microsoft will stop interfering with that email's composition by randomly archiving another email.

This issue is characteristic of Microsoft's slipshod composition of the email client generally. Load times, while Outlook proudly displays you an email animation, and browser resource consumption (how many see the message that the tab is using too much energy?), are excessive. It's as if Microsoft is determined to ignore good web app standards and push a traditional fat client (meaning, installed software) into your browser, one laden with unnecessary complexity for the simple, everyday task you are trying to perform.

How many of us sit and watch the email animation for 5+ seconds before we can just see our inbox? Microsoft thinks you want to see their animations instead of simply getting on with why you opened your email.

The problem here, in general, is Microsoft's determination to recreate the (installed version of) Outlook software experience in a web browser. Maybe a bunch of old people are responsible for this product, and yearn for the heyday when Outlook was basically an email monopoly. Comparing the Outlook experience--load times, ease of use, energy efficiency (which matters, because it determines how many tabs you can have open in your browser stably)--to other email apps, such as Gmail, leaves Outlook obviously wanting and inferior. BTW, Gmail is merely an adequate client. It's no paragon--but it's a significantly better user experience than Outlook, so much more responsive and easier to use.

The problem with Microsoft is that Microsoft believes a product is always better if it features more useless complexity, and graphics/animation, if it hogs resources, etc. Microsoft became dominant by having a symbiotic upgrade cycle with PCs. The software kept requiring faster processors, more disk space, more memory, etc. So users needed to upgrade computers. Manufacturers responded, of course, by helping Microsoft capture 98% of the desktop market (installing its OS and apps as defaults).

Microsoft has never moved on and un-learned that lesson in a browser-based world. So it keeps making your experience slower, more complex, lower performing. That leads to mistakes like physically interrupting you in the middle of merely typing an email, randomly archiving another email, and trumpeting this unwanted action as an accomplishment instead of what it is: a poorly planned annoyance and disruption.

Even Microsoft's support response effectively blames you: Microsoft tells you your backspace key is now a shortcut to archive. Really? Was that wise? Was that helpful? Anybody with a clue knows that a keyboard shortcut should be a combination of simultaneously pressed keys to avoid bad user experiences exactly like this and ensure the keyboard shortcut is what the user meant to do. That is, anybody but Microsoft, who think the problem is you dared to use your backspace key when they've decided it needs to invoke a feature you may not even like to use at all.

In short, Microsoft thinks the world needs to change to accommodate Microsoft. Unfortunately, as I said, that's a lesson never un-learned from when Microsoft had an effective monopoly. Any sensible software company would update its email client to correct this unfortunate outcome. Don't hold your breath waiting for Microsoft to fix this.

Is that the only way? I use short cut keys like Ctrl-V, etc for inserting things into my email. (I found that typing my emails in Word and then copy paste them gets me around that pesky archive bug - but its a pain in the butt!)

I have disabled the predictive text - which I always hated - so that's a plus - hopefully it doesn't 'auto turn on' when I do updates.

When I turned off the shortcuts keys, it made my version of this problem go away. For me it wasnt the E, but somthing around the space bar. Anyway, shortcut keys off solved it for me. Good luck!

Well, I found that now d+e isn’t archiving anymore. I had reported this to my last ticket that was escalated (that it was a shortcut that was doing it), and they did not reply. Now it seems to not happen. I think that they keep reprogramming the site and there is always some glitch that archives the message when typing. Their only explanations/solutions are as follows:

    1. it is shift+e
    2. turn off all shortcuts (which basically can turn off cut and paste in my opinion)
    3. unsync your phone (as it must be a client-side problem since Microsoft programmers do not make mistakes)

I have also found that they do not seem to follow up with current tickets and it is very hard to open any tickets now. I have opened tickets with various questions and they are avoiding almost every questions and deflecting them. I’ve seen that in past tickets they have pretty much not solved anything. Things either get solved on their own or don’t get solved. I don’t understand what kind of support is with the email platform. This particular issue has not ever been resolved. It just seems like they keep changing the code. You cannot just rewrite code so that it will keep archiving emails while people type a different way. It should be a a complicated shortcut or be only while it is selected. I personally prefer saving as a draft if it is not in my inbox.
