"The properties of the message have been changed" prompt when forwarding/replying in Outlook

When users open a message in its own window that has a pdf attachment and replies or forwards the message; when they close the original window, outlook prompts "The properties of the message <email_subject> have been changed. Want to save your changes to this message?"

Steps to recreate this issue:

  • Message must have pdf or txt attachment
  • Open the original message in its own window
  • Reply-to or forward the message
  • Closing original message that was previously opened in its own window

Attempts to disable add-ins or running outlook in safe-mode do not resolve this issue.

Hi All,

First, apologize for the inconvenience caused by this problem in Outlook Client. Microsoft has realized this issue and the dedicated outlook teams are working on this problem to fix it. It is a known issue in the current Outlook Clients, and a fix will be released to Office version 2106 on 2021/6/17. For the affected users please navigate to Outlook Web App as temporary workaround and wait for the new fix release with some more patience, thanks. For more details, please refer to "The properties of the message have been changed" prompt when forwarding/replying in Outlook.

Thanks for your understanding and patience.

Best Regards,

Oliver

Just tested v2106 in the Preview Channel and the following issues are fixed. I was told by our CSM that it will be pushed out to Current Channel later today or tomorrow.

    1. Properties have changed save dialog on replies/forwards
    2. Meetings immediately saving when clicking New Meeting/Appointment, causes blank meetings.
    3. Unknown Error when trying forward some meetings

Waiting to verify if this issue has been resolved:

    1. Failed to upload attachments error: Failed to upload attachments to server (error 0x80070057).

The issue started about 3 weeks ago with a small group and while the number of affected users is steadily growing, with a billion** outlook users, its a small group. It's not a widespread issue or the forums would be blowing up with multiple long threads.

The solutions are all over the board... which makes it hard to repro and no repro makes it hard to fix.

** that's a wild guess. I figure 50% of office users also use outlook... with a fair number using older versions. I don't how many office users there are.

Yeah, that won't fix it. They are still investigating - part of the problem was getting a repro - it's not widespread enough that they can repro it easily. And the repros (and possible solutions) are all over the place and don't work for all.

We are also experiencing the same issue since updating our exchange to the May security patch (We updated late and the issue only cropped up after the update). We are running Exchange 2016 and Office 2016 + Office 2019 where this issue has cropped up.

When updating office, the issue was resolved for 30 minutes to a few hours before it returned.
