"The properties of the message have been changed" prompt when forwarding/replying in Outlook

When users open a message in its own window that has a pdf attachment and replies or forwards the message; when they close the original window, outlook prompts "The properties of the message <email_subject> have been changed. Want to save your changes to this message?"

Steps to recreate this issue:

  • Message must have pdf or txt attachment
  • Open the original message in its own window
  • Reply-to or forward the message
  • Closing original message that was previously opened in its own window

Attempts to disable add-ins or running outlook in safe-mode do not resolve this issue.

Hi All,

First, apologize for the inconvenience caused by this problem in Outlook Client. Microsoft has realized this issue and the dedicated outlook teams are working on this problem to fix it. It is a known issue in the current Outlook Clients, and a fix will be released to Office version 2106 on 2021/6/17. For the affected users please navigate to Outlook Web App as temporary workaround and wait for the new fix release with some more patience, thanks. For more details, please refer to "The properties of the message have been changed" prompt when forwarding/replying in Outlook.

Thanks for your understanding and patience.

Best Regards,

Oliver

My organization has so far only one user with this issue which as far as I know started today. I've tried a few of these tricks and it hasn't changed anything.

    Office version: 2105 (Build 14026.20246 Click-to-Run)

    Exchange version: 2013.

After some testing, I came to the conclusion that plaintext emails are unaffected by this issue. HTML-formatted emails are, whether there are attachments or not.

You know, I did not check that and I will do that.

I did notice that *most* of the emails had this issue but some did not, I bet that is why.

    Good eye.

    Hi all,

For any of you that repro this issue and do not have the Adobe add-ins please submit a Contact Support ticket (Help, Contact Support). Not everyone has this option so please check just in case. Tenant Admins and Insiders should have this option in Outlook for Office 365. Below is what it looks like if you have this option.

We have traces with Adobe but need traces without to better isolate why this is happening.

I wonder if this issue is related to the exchange version being used. Even if it is not 1:1 every user on a particular exchange version, it might be that it only occurs on certain versions. I am using Exchange 2013 shared on UK Fast. Can others experiencing this problem post their server versions please.

    We use exchange as well.
