"The properties of the message have been changed" prompt when forwarding/replying in Outlook

When users open a message in its own window that has a pdf attachment and replies or forwards the message; when they close the original window, outlook prompts "The properties of the message <email_subject> have been changed. Want to save your changes to this message?"

Steps to recreate this issue:

  • Message must have pdf or txt attachment
  • Open the original message in its own window
  • Reply-to or forward the message
  • Closing original message that was previously opened in its own window

Attempts to disable add-ins or running outlook in safe-mode do not resolve this issue.

Hi All,

First, apologize for the inconvenience caused by this problem in Outlook Client. Microsoft has realized this issue and the dedicated outlook teams are working on this problem to fix it. It is a known issue in the current Outlook Clients, and a fix will be released to Office version 2106 on 2021/6/17. For the affected users please navigate to Outlook Web App as temporary workaround and wait for the new fix release with some more patience, thanks. For more details, please refer to "The properties of the message have been changed" prompt when forwarding/replying in Outlook.

Thanks for your understanding and patience.

Best Regards,

Oliver

This is happening to us with an On-Prem Exchange

Occurs with reply and forwards of plain text emails as well as with attachments.

This is with all my addons disabled we still get this issue.

Edit: it is also really strange what is happening with the drafts. Sometimes the body is completely wiped out, and I could have 4 or 5 drafts from the same email as I am doing this testing.

    1. Open email (into its own window)
    2. Reply
    3. Close reply
    4. Attempt to close original email
    5. Receive error

If I open and close a few replies, I end up with a new draft for every one test, and most of them have the body completely empty.

I noticed that, for us, this only happens to users with certain group policies applied. We have quite a few group policies being applied, so I am still trying to narrow it down. I have a hunch that it might be related to folder redirection...

For me, it worked to disable that option. I think its like some of the other possible solutions in this thread- it depends on the user.

On the drafts, that is normal draft behavior for the reading pane but opened messages usually need a save first. I've had the goofy draft hanging around after sending a message - its above my pay grade (which is $0 <g>) to know if its related.

Are the messages that trigger it HTML with external content?
