Outlook for Android not syncing new emails

Outlook for Android has stopped loading new messages in my Inbox.  I suspect the behavior ties to a recent update. I'm set to have updates for Outlook automatically update and in Play Store states the last update was 3 days ago. I've been aware of the issue for the last 2 days.

Characteristics

  • Outlook new email icon displays on top bar
  • Notification shade displays the email title and message preview
  • Navigating to message from the notification shade, Outlook states "Couldn't Open Message"
  • Navigating to Outlook app directly and pull down to refresh >> Nothing new loads
    • No error message provided

Reset Attempts

  • Force Stopped app and reloads > no change
  • System restart from UI, load app > no change
  • Hard restart of the device, load app >> Inbox refreshes!
    • Hard restart = Volume down & Power button for 5-8 seconds until reboot initiated
    • Email is received for a short while and then fails to sync again

Environment

  • Samsung Galaxy Note 8
    • SM-N950W
  • Android 9 (Pie) w/One UI
    • Ver. N950WVLU5DSC1
  • Other MS apps loaded
    • Teams (not connecting either recently)
    • Word
    • Excel
    • PowerPoint

Any help or insight anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Jay

Hi  Jay,

Thanks for your posting here, firstly, please sign in your account in your mailbox web page and check if this account can receive the emails successfully, if yes, please open Outlook app, go to Settings > Tap the account that is not syncing > Tap Reset Account. Check to see if your account is syncing. If it still doesn't work, may I confirm that if your account is IMAP or Exchange account? if yes, please delete and re-add your email account.

If issue persists, please go to Open the Menu > tap the ? > Contact Support. For your reference: Get in-app help for Outlook for iOS and Android which is dedicated to handling Outlook for Android related issues, you'll receive a notification once the support team get back to you, you can easily communicate with them there. Your time and understanding will be appreciate.

Regards,

Bryan

I had this problem with my new Vivo Nex Dual Display. It wasn't a problem at all with the 6 or 7 Xiaomi phones I've used until now.

I read this, and went into the settings of the Vivo. I didn't find them exactly as described here. On the Vivo, it's called "allowing the feature (Authenticator, Outlook etc.) to operate in full power", which seems to mean allowing them in the background.

I adjusted them last night, including also Teams, and it's been more than 12 hours and still ok. This is more than it's ever gone without it failing before, so I think it might actually be fixed.

I think the problem arises due to the different default settings set (on different phones) when an app is installed. Which means it might not actually an app issue. Just my thoughts.

My phone is working again, I reinstalled the latest version of Outlook client from Google App Store. Apparently it did not auto update my phone like my desktop does so was a couple of version out of date.   Seems to be working OK again for the moment, but make use your smartphone client is latest and greatest for Office 365

I have been having similar problems with Samsung 8+, Android with latest updates and Office 365 that developed about 2 weeks ago.

I  tried the battery thing mentioned in this thread that seemed the most popular solution and it did not work. That said my specific issue was when deleting multiple emails on my phone only one would be deleted on the desktop so not fully sync all the activity on my phone back to desktop or outlook.com

Reboots of phone, app and desktop did not help my situation like others in this thread, and NOT wanting to uninstall the Outlook app as was suggested as one alternative I am now manually deleting emails on phone one at a time. Select email delete immediately as single item with trash can icon, then select next delete it, select next etc etc.  When I have done this 50 times I am still frustrated compared to how things works a few patches ago worked seamlessly but at least my email is somewhat in sync using this technique.

That is a bit of a hassle but you can use this method and delete many pretty individual emails quickly and the desktop will catch up and delete the desktop version one after one like you did on your phone a minute or 2 later on both desktop and Outlook.com.

This is not a fix just a work around... and since this is a known and growing problem Microsoft or Samsung should figure out wahts broken in the last few patches as it was working great a few updates ago say ini July 2019???
