Ever since then search is broken in Outlook on both computers - any search returns no results. Windows 10 search outside Outlook works fine. I've rebuilt the index, used ScanPST.exe and tried other things at https://lookeen.com/blog/how-to-fix-outlook-2016-search-problems and https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Reset-indexing-by-rebuilding-your-Instant-Search-catalog-213a2728-0ef4-427a-9bb2-aed329a59b17 but the problem remains on both computers.

I hadn't known about the Advanced Find (accessed by Search Ribbon | Search Tools | Advanced Find), which has some useful functionality. But this is not typically the search capability that I want.
Microsoft should learn from Google, which has a very helpful Advanced Search page for web content at https://www.google.com/advanced\_search. Some of these may already work in Microsoft's search box, as they do in Googles, but there is convenience and transparency in making them available and documented. Similar options for word fragments without having to guess a syntax using question marks and asterisks would also be helpful.
Finding an email quickly is one of the types of functionality where Microsoft has fallen a lot behind the competition. Get with it.
I went to the Office365 Updates section of Outlook today and ask for new updates. After they were installed and I restarted Outlook, the search function was working again.
I also did the update (1702; build 7870.2031). Search window on Outlook in current folders now will pull up emails by key word, the search result displays only emails older than one year and, until I click each email to open the body, all I able to see listed on the header is sender name (me) and the Subject line.
so, important functions needed for efficient searching have still not been corrected.

I turned on updates and went from Version 1702 build 7766.2060 to build 7870.2031, and search seems to be working fine, both in the current folders and sub-folders.
So this seems fixed. Thanks.
