Outlook app on Android - "An Error Occurred" when trying to setup my account

Hello all,

Would appreciate your thoughts on the following situation:

I just installed the Outlook App on my Galaxy S5 phone (Android 6).

When I start it, I get prompted for an email address so I enter my work email (Office 365) and after a few seconds it looks like something comes up and then get dumped back to the "Get Started" screen with the most helpful error message in human history:

"An Error Occurred"

Wow! Where to begin?

I cannot make it past this screen to access any settings or options of any kind.

Guess what - the OWA app for Android works fine, but it doesn't have WEAR capability unlike the Outlook app.

Any suggestions/assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Pete

You have to register your device through Authenticator app actually, and disable battery optimization for that app in Android settings

That with solve any inconveniences with office 365 accounts

I know this is an old thread.

But I just had this problem with my Samsung 5 phone trying to install MS Outlook app to get my mail via Office365 Corporate Account.  I tried all the things people suggested. Installing, uninstalling, rebooting, dancing around the room etc etc.

After hours of frustration, here is what fixed it for me.

    Go to "settings" in phone,

    Go to "security" settings.

    Find "Device Administrators"

Open this. There was an icon here for outlook that said "Outlook Device Policy" (the app was installed currently on my phone but not working)

This option "Outlook Device Policy"  was un-checked. I Checked it. Now the is a nice green check mark beside it enabling it.

Now go back to Outlook and try to set  it up.

Worked right off the bat. I cannot say if this is everyone's issue. It was for me. And I think in my case no amount of installing and uninstalling and updating, praying etc etc etc. Would have worked until this checkbox is checked.

I hope a few people will find this as the solution to save themselves the frustration.

    Regards

I had the exact problem.  I could connect to Office 365 Exchange online by creating an exchange account and using the standard email app on my phone but any Office apps (Word, Excel, Office 365 Admin, SKype for Business) would not login.

Fortunately I have admin access so I could powershell onto Office 365 ran these commands:

Get list of accounts registered and display identity

    **Get-MobileDevice -Mailbox ****@domain.co.uk | FL DeviceModel, Identity

    Remove the account

    Remove-MobileDevice -Identity <Identity Code>

Once I had run that I could connect through the Outlook app.

    Hope this helps someone.

I just experienced this issue also. After a required password change in my work's Office365 account, when the Android Outlook app realized its password wasn't working and it asked for the new one, it never worked. After clearing all app data, I got to the "An error occurred" many people have reported. What worked was going into the Settings app, Users & accounts, deleting the work account, then adding the account again in Outlook.
