This was most helpful and seems to have done the trick for me at least, but I'm still not over impressed with the whole thing and the enforced changeover, though.

Change for change's sake - it has no particular advantages over Hotmail for me.

I do NOT like the side bar with the ads!! If it is not able to be removed I will drop this email acct.  I have had this email address for many, many years but it can go.  It is useless and aggravating.

We understand how you feel about the advertisements posted on your mailbox.

There's no option in removing the ads in free Outlook.com account. You can remove it by upgrading your account to Ad-free Outlook. You can check out this article for more information about it.

You may still read your emails in full view. Here's how:

1. Go to www.outlook.com and sign in with your Microsoft account
2. Go to your inbox
3. Open an email
4. Click the Full view button which is at the upper right corner of your screen beside the up and down arrows

Shows how amazing this side bar works when I didn't even realise that they were adverts it was showing me.  Thought it was just different links to other parts of Outlook that i didn't use.  Like most people I will NEVER click on ads like this, that are significantly over intrusive. So not only are they a waste of space time and money they are just detrimental to the success of a company like Microsoft as people will move to different e-mail accounts.  I access my e-mails on my net book and now most of the time approximately 20% of my screen is the email I want to read and the rest of the screen is taken up with ridiculously large writing or things I will never click on.  I wanted to cry the day that my hotmail changed over to Outlook.  I was like going from a good e-mail system to going to one that a 3 year old had designed.  I think that it makes a laughing stock of Microsoft when I can actually see more of an email when I access it on my phone than I can when I access it on a computer.
