The sidebar cant be removed but the ads can be by using a popup blocker. Also in Firefox you can use NoScript which blocks all scripting (helps in Malware)

I find this to be a major nuisance while working with my email. Please get rid of it!

Hi,
By design you cannot disable the advertisement at the right side of outlook screen. However.I will forward the suggestion over to our product team as consideration for a future release.
