I created a new Outlook.com email address instead of renaming existing. How can I free up the new account?

Hi,

Before realising I could transfer/upgrade/rename my existing Live account to an outlook.com address, I created a new one in error. After realising my mistake, I deleted/closed the newly created outlook.com address then attempted to rename my current Live account to the now closed outlook.com account. Unfortunately I am not able to as I'm told I will need to wait 270 days before the account I created will be available for use.

Clearly I can prove I created the outlook.com account as I have all the security details. Is there any way of freeing up the account immediately?

Additionally, I am not the only person who has made this mistake, several of us jumped in feet-first. Below are a selection of links to people asking the same question. None of us have had a useful reply yet. Please can somebody provide us with a solution (other than mark your diary for 270 days from now)?

Hi Everyone,

Merging accounts is currently not available for Microsoft accounts. This issue has been reported to our Senior Support Team and they are currently looking into this. Well be sending updates once all the details are complete.

I will be locking this thread now. For workarounds please refer to my post last August 6, 2012.

    I went to delete my account, and the following was on the last confirmation screen.  Looks like we'll need to set a reminder for 9 months from now :)

    "To deactivate your Outlook account, click Close account. All stored messages are permanently deleted and incoming email is refused.Your email address is reserved for 270 days after closing your account. After that time, it may become available for other people to use.To reactivate your account once you have closed it, sign in within 270 days."

    thanks Chris for the reply. The account was a day old, I deleted it today.

    What is the approximate time frame before the address is released?

    The second option  given is how I had it configured. I only deleted it after seeing something mentioning doing so, and it being 24/48hrs before it was again available. I've since learned the hard way that is not the case.

    If you created a second account with an @outlook.com address we do not support the ability to merge accounts or to delete one and immediately add the address to another account. There are two choices.

    One option is to delete the account and wait until we free up the email address and then create an alias to that address.

    The second option is forward mail from your new @outlook.com account to your old @hotmail.com account, and then allow your old @hotmail.com account to send on behalf of your @outlook.com account. To do this:

    => Go to your new @outlook.com account, click settings and mail options, click email forwarding, and turn on email forwarding to your @hotmail.com account

    => Then go to your old @hotmail.com account, click to mail options, click sending and receiving mail from other accounts, and then add your @outlook.com account as an account to send from.
