Hello -

When I attempt to add my outlook.com email account to any iOS device I recieve the error "Unable to verify account information".

I see this problem on my iPhone 4s and iPad and all devices are running iOS5.01 with no additional updates available.

I followed these steps to setup my account

-settings, add new mail account

-selected Hotmail

-entered my outlook.com address (full SMTP address - eg ******@outlook.com) and my password

-after several seconds I recieve the error "Unable to verify account information"

Power cycling the devices doesn't help.  Everything works fine from the web.

Any ideas?

sign in to what account on the web browser?

Just upgraded to iOS8.0.1 and had exactly the problem described. I went into Outlook through a browser, disabled my phone and turned off 2 step security and boom... It worked just like you said. MICROSOFT - you need to fix the bug!!!

You don't need to remove any mobile numbers. If you have enabled 2 step authentication, just generate an App password and use that in the password field. iOS (8.2 as of this writing) cannot handle 2 step authentication.

Just a note for anyone having problems, what you need to do is this:

    go to: https://account.live.com/proofs/Manage

scroll down to the section labelled: App Passwords

and create a new password. then use the password it displays on your Iphone.

Outlooks explanation for this error is:

Some apps and devices (such as Xbox 360, Windows Phone or email apps on your other devices) don't support security codes for two-step verification. In these cases, you need to create an app password to sign in. Learn more about app passwords.

    I hope this helps?
