Outlook.com sent items show sender not recipient - how can I change the display setting

When viewing sent items on outlook.com the items are displayed in a list with the sender name (my name) showing - rather than a list of the recipients. How can I change it to show the recipients. Currently to remember who an email was sent to I have to open it.

Hi Everyone,

I'm Lanie, a Senior Support Analyst for Microsoft and I am part of Hotmail/Outlook.com Support Escalations Team investigating this case.

We would like to apologize for the delayed response and for the inconvenience that the issue has caused you.

You have reported that your name appears in the recipient’s column instead of the email recipient’s name/address when viewing your sent items using a web browser.

Here are the reasons why this is happening:

  1. If you are using an email client such as Windows Live Mail or Outlook client when sending an email.
  2. If you are importing emails from a third party email account (e.g. Gmail, Yahoo! mail etc.) to your Hotmail/Outlook.com account using TrueSwitch or POP settings, emails from the sent items folder will show your name in recipient’s column.

We understand that you don't want this behavior and you want everything to be synchronized like showing email recipients name in the sent items folder instead of your names when using a web browser. This behavior of Hotmail/Outlook.com is by design. But, we will be taking this concern as a feature request. We appreciate your feedback regarding our product.

For other feedback and suggestions that will help us in improving our product, please visit this link.

If you have other concerns regarding our product Outlook.com, we recommend that you create a new post with regards to your issue. This will help us address your concern in a timely and proper manner.

I am now  locking this thread.

Thanks!

Lanie

If you look at the date of the original post, it was somewhere around last August.

Microsoft has put a lot of effort into advertising to convince users to migrate from Gmail. One would assume that there's been at least one case where someone from the Hotmail team (or outlook.com team) actually tries the migration process with folders that have more than one or two e-mail messages in them.

Don't get me wrong: I really appreciate your answers and the fact that you're trying to find a solution to this, and, we WANT to use outlook.com - because we think it is superior to other e-mail services - but if you have 4000+ e-mails in your sent folder dating back to 2000 all displaying "my name" in the sent folder, I'm sure you understand how useless it all becomes. Sure, I have Outlook 2013 and I do have the luxury of having a laptop to carry around and access it anytime, but, it is, at best, a workaround, not a solution.

Once again, thanks for taking the time to add your comments to this thread.

    Hi Jay et al,

Thank you for your response. I'm going to agree with you in that it's likely due to a similar technical issue/limitation, stemming from the back end (Outlook.com).

Of course, I'd love to have everyone start using the Outlook client, but that's not the immediate concern.   :)

We are going to follow up with the Hotmail folks internally and ensure they're aware of how this issue explicitly affects those that are importing mail from other web clients.

Thank you all for your patience.

    Abdias-

Thanks for the response but it doesn't apply.  See my post from April 7 2013 (just a few above your post) describing the issue when simply migrating from Gmail to Outlook.com.  Office Outlook not involved.  The issues may be caused by a similar tech issue

    • but I wouldn't know and don't care.

Outlook.com is a current product that Microsoft is heavily investing it's advertising money in.  My take is that all that advertising is designed to get Gmail users like me to move over to Outlook.com.  It would make sense to make the transition seemless.  Having years worth of your old emails NOT display the correct headers with Outlook.com is a real problem.

Let me see if I got it right based on the article you had linked.

*Outlook 2007 and 2010 uses Microsoft Outlook Hotmail Connector. There are some "limitations" with this plugin (that is not going to be updated), therefore, Outlook 2007 and 2010 display the sender's name instead of the recipient. Outlook 2013 uses EAS, therefore, it doesn't have the aforementioned issue, and it displays the recipient correctly.*This is all good and fine.

    However.

I'm starting to suspect that this is some sort of April's Fool joke, so if you would be so kind as to confirm, in a reply, that you do, indeed, realize, that the issue we have is with the WEB INTERFACE (WEBMAIL) part (i.e. outlook.com) and not, I repeat, NOT with the CLIENT called Microsoft Outlook 2013.

BTW, this is getting way beyond ridiculous. Just admit that there's nothing you can do about this issue so we can move on.

(Also, my native language is not English. Maybe I just can't express myself clearly.)
