Outlook.com sent items show sender not recipient - how can I change the display setting

When viewing sent items on outlook.com the items are displayed in a list with the sender name (my name) showing - rather than a list of the recipients. How can I change it to show the recipients. Currently to remember who an email was sent to I have to open it.

Hi Everyone,

I'm Lanie, a Senior Support Analyst for Microsoft and I am part of Hotmail/Outlook.com Support Escalations Team investigating this case.

We would like to apologize for the delayed response and for the inconvenience that the issue has caused you.

You have reported that your name appears in the recipient’s column instead of the email recipient’s name/address when viewing your sent items using a web browser.

Here are the reasons why this is happening:

  1. If you are using an email client such as Windows Live Mail or Outlook client when sending an email.
  2. If you are importing emails from a third party email account (e.g. Gmail, Yahoo! mail etc.) to your Hotmail/Outlook.com account using TrueSwitch or POP settings, emails from the sent items folder will show your name in recipient’s column.

We understand that you don't want this behavior and you want everything to be synchronized like showing email recipients name in the sent items folder instead of your names when using a web browser. This behavior of Hotmail/Outlook.com is by design. But, we will be taking this concern as a feature request. We appreciate your feedback regarding our product.

For other feedback and suggestions that will help us in improving our product, please visit this link.

If you have other concerns regarding our product Outlook.com, we recommend that you create a new post with regards to your issue. This will help us address your concern in a timely and proper manner.

I am now  locking this thread.

Thanks!

Lanie

    Hi Wilhelm,

Sorry to say that I am unaware of any change or improvement on this issue.

It's actually been a problem with Microsoft's various email services over the years (Hotmail, Live and now Outlook). I have tried ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING (!!!) to get this to work properly, and I'm sorry to say that I've never found a way to make it work properly. Escalating the issue with Microsoft gets nowhere.

I am no IT expert, but I think this has to do with how Microsoft's server handle the header information in email messages. If the header information shows that the message was sent from a non-Microsoft account, it just defaults to using your name rather than the recipient's name in the "sent" folder. So if you bring in messages from your AOL / Yahoo / Gmail accounts, it just lists your name instead of the recipients of your messages - which is absurd! :)

Although there is no "solution" that I know for the webmail interface, there are two things that might help you if you want to stay with Microsoft:

    1.

The new Windows 8 email "app" (or program, or whatever you want to call it) does not suffer from this problem! I installed a preview of Win8 on my computer, and was amazed when the mail "app" displayed all the messages in my sent folder correctly! Maybe this is good news for the long-term future of the webmail interface.

    2.

If you have a full version of Outlook (with the Outlook Connector plug-in), you can change the columns of your "sent" folder to display the "to:" rather than "from:" information. To be honest, I find that the Outlook Connector plug-in is very unreliable, but it would allow you to browse through your imported sent messages without the problem of showing your name on every message.

Unfortunately, both of these solutions are useless if you need regular webmail access to your old sent messages.

I think each of us needs to decide whether we are willing to accept this problem in order to use the rest of Microsoft's services. Personally, I have a Nokia Lumia 800 phone and I really like things like Skydrive and Office. I would rather live with a small problem concerning old imported "sent" messages rather than privacy and ownership concerns (Google) or pay for new and inflexible devices (Apple), but that is just my opinion.

I'm sorry that this doesn't solve your problem, but maybe one of the solutions above will help. And Microsoft - if you're listening - please sort out this webmail problem! :)

    Best of luck,

    DWOR

I realize this thread hasn't been active for more than 7 weeks... but I'm wondering if a solution has been discovered to this problem...?

I recently (yesterday) decided to migrate all of my previous e-mails to my new outlook.com account, in an attempt to finally rid myself of the inherent difficulties of attempting to manage several different e-mail accounts. After a long and arduous import process, from my ISP & Gmail accounts - I was very surprised and disappointed to discover that all the transferred e-mails contained in the "Sent" folder were displayed/arranged by the Sender's name (mine, obviously)... and there was no option to sort by or display the recipients name. All other e-mail services display their "Sent" folder by the recipients name, for obvious reasons. Even new e-mail sent from my outlook.com account, display the recipients name... but imported items can not?

I was initially impressed with the new outlook.com interface... which is why I was going to choose it, as my exclusive e-mail service... but I have 8 years worth of previously "Sent" messages that I have to access regularly, and I'm unable to locate them with any efficiency, due to this unacceptable "feature". I certainly sympathize with "ShonaghWoods" and "dwo.r"... when you consider the new outlook.com UI has been active for more than 4.5 months, I can't understand how this issue hasn't been resolved... or has it?

Any assistance or information anyone can provide, would be appreciated.
