Outlook for Mac Does Not Work on OS X 10.10 (Yosemite Public Beta)

Outlook launches without a Home Screen.

Menu Items are accessible and function properly (i.e. compose and send email, access Accounts etc.).

However, Home Screen does not render and you cannot see (or access) Mailboxes, Calendar, Contacts etc.

Appreciate that this is an issue with Public Beta Version but Apple has now issued this to One Million Mac Users and plenty of Microsoft Users rely on Outlook for Mac so, will need to be resolved.

Hi All, I just discovered something fascinating and am posting here in case this helps anyone else. It turns out that when I visited the OS X App Store and clicked the link to download and install Yosemite a few days after the general release, I assumed I was getting Apple's public release, but it actually downloaded an early Beta version of Yosemite. Why it did this I have no idea. I only discovered this now because I kept checking the Update page on the App Store, and each time I  was prompted to download a newer Beta version. So I've now downloaded and installed Beta versions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and finally Beta 6. Google tells me that Beta 6 was the last Developer release prior to the final GM release. It's official version number was: OS X 10.10 (14A388b). Whereas the final FINAL GM worldwide release is OS X 10.10 (14A389). The point being in my car that my issues with Outlook occurred when I was still running one of the earliest Beta version (1 or 2, not sure which). As this thread shows, others were having issues with Outlook up thru version 3, and by version 4 issues seem to have abated almost entirely.

So - if you're experiencing issues, one thing to be sure to do before trying other workarounds is to use System Information to check your OS X version of Yosemite. If you, like me, somehow ended up with an early Beta installed on your system, it might explain why you're having issues. And these issues might be resolved by upgrading to at least Beta 6, and even better, the final release - "14A389."

    Hi, Bruce

Thank you very much for your reply.

I must be having a different problem. I haven't experienced the missing window problem.

I tried your method as outlined in you recent post: I deleted the .plist file; started Outlook with the Option key; create a new identity; made the new identity the default; close the Database Rebuild app; open Outlook; created a new account through the preferences>account dialog. Nothing.

The account always has an orange "ball" next to the account indicating that it cannot connect. And then I start getting repeated visits from the "autodiscover" dialog box I mentioned in my previous post.

Again, thanks for your reply. But no luck yet.

We do have a flaky network here at work with really convoluted connections and proxies. I'll do a little more investigation around the network configuration.

    Cheers,  S t u a r t .

My thanks to all who have contributed to this thread, since between one clue and another I have been successful in finally getting Outlook to behave normally. Back to its happy old self -- in Yosemite.

Stuart - although our issues are different I'm hoping this may resolve for you as well:

    • Delete the outlook.plist file
    • Launch Outlook with the Option key held down; this brings up the Database Rebuild app that allows you to establish a new identify (in addition to the "old" misbehaving version that is listed in the box). I created a new identity, used the Settings button to make it the Default identity (it turns bold)  and closed out of the app.
    • Launched Outlook. The Main Window appeared - yay! This is what I had not been able to see before. Then go into prefs>accounts and create a new Exchange account (I'm on a corporate network as well). The new account instantly downloaded all mail residing on the server. Calendar items all intact, Contacts all there as well. the only thing missing was 6 years of stored emails in multiple folders.
    • Closed out of Outlook. Relaunched with Option key. Brought up the Database Rebuild app. Rebuilt my old Identity folder (this process generous a clone copy of itself, self-titled "Backup"). After the rebuild I used the settings button again to establish my rebuilt folder as the Default identity. Quit out of the app.
    • Relaunched Outlook. Main Window appears. Went into Prefs panel, General, and untagged the "Hide on my computer folders" box. Closed Prefs and all my archive folders reappeared. Years worth of emails once again on view and available. Life is good. Now I can enjoy Yosemite.

    Cheers, Bruce

    Hi, Clinton

My experience has been very similar to Bruce's experience. Last Friday I had an operational Outlook application under Mavericks that I use at work. I installed Yosemite (over the top of Mavericks) on the weekend. Came back to work on Monday and have since found it impossible to get a connection to the Exchange server.

I don't experience the "missing main window" problem. I just can't get a connection to the server.

I get continuous popups of the following dialog.

Checking "Always use my response for this server" appears to have no effect: the dialog box comes back. If I try using curl on the URL listed in the dialog box I get a "600" error, but then so does my colleague running Maverick - but his Outlook works.

I have tried setting up the account in Apple Mail (by the way, I agree with you about Apple Mail), but this does not work either, with very little (none) feedback.

I have no idea what to do now. Outlook doesn't work: web access to Outlook does work (but is very inconvenient). I'm not sure who to "blame" here (apart from myself for not reading this forum before upgrading to Yosemite ;)). Though, I suspect it's Microsoft's problem for not keeping up with changes in the new release of Mac OS X - I mean Yosemite was only in public beta for how long? months?.

I have tried "delete .plist, move identity files, reboot, ..." recommendations: didn't work. I've tried the "kill the database daemon" recommendation: didn't work.

Outlook is the only application of the many I have on this machine that doesn't work.

    This is very frustrating.

    Cheers,  S t u a r t .

I installed Yosemite on a MacBook Pro and everything worked fine. Then tried an install on an older MacPro.  In this case, the Ethernet connection was lost and had to be re-entered in System Preferences/Network. Also, one can no longer perform searches in Outlook. Strange because searches work fine on the laptop. Will notify Apple of these glitches.
