Just to clarify your statement dated July 17, 2014, on what account you are unable to log in, is it when using your Gmail (current primary alias) or when using your @hotmail.com account?

Also, to answer your question, since you have added your Gmail as your alias and made it as your primary alias, it is by default that the only function of that email account is to Send. Your Gmail account is considered as an EASI account. EASI account or Email As Sign In accounts are third party accounts that are pre-made before using to Outlook.com or other Microsoft services. That means that it has it's own mailbox. Emails sent to that account is still receive on the main inbox (in your case, still in Gmail.com).

To be able to make that account as a Send and Receive account, you need to have or to add an Outlook.com account as alias again then make the Outlook.com account as your primary account. With this you will have an active mailbox.

I understand that you wanted to add an alias account, let me help you with your concern

Please be informed that "Add an existing email address as a Microsoft account alias" informs you to add a non-Microsoft account. Do kindly use a diffrent account, so that system will allow to add an alias account.

Please be informed that an existing Microsoft account cannot be added as an alias because an alias would be sharing the inbox of your primary account. An existing Microsoft account already has an inbox so it cannot be added as an alias, only third party accounts can be added as an alias, hence making this as a send only account.

For Email Forwarding, when setting this up, it does not mean it would be created as an alias. You would just be forwarding your emails from account A to account B so that account B would receive account A's emails. But you would have to continue signing in to account A to keep this active.

Well my copy an paste still didn't work. It basically has an option for adding an existing account. When i read about using aliases as a safer alternative to the very convenient but apparently unsafe account linking I presumed I'd be able to alias my existing accounts and carry on much the same as before, after account linking is disabled.
