Outlook won't open, splash screen comes up briefly and then disappears again and the program quits

My mother's installation of Outlook 2011 has suddenly stopped working.  When she tries to run it, the splash screen comes up briefly (like for about a second or less) and then disappears again and the program quits.  This is all that it does.  It does not display any kind of error message.  It just quits.  There is a file sitting on her Desktop titled Sent Items.mbox and the Get Info window and icon suggest that this file is connected to Outlook.  I assume that this is the file containing her sent emails, but I can’t find where it is supposed to go.

What I am think is that my mom was poking around in folders that she should not have been in an accidentally moved this file out of its correct location and that Outlook, not finding it, is simply quitting.  Is this what is happening?  Can someone tell me where this file is supposed to go?

It might not be on autoupdate yet (no idea what's holding it up).

    I rebuilt but that didnt work then read all the way through the thread to the last post and that gave me the answer.

    For anyone reading this who may, like me not know how to find Terminal on their Mac - the easiest way apparently is to click on the magnifying glass at top right of screen and then type in Terminal. Its icon is a black oblong. Click on it to open the box then just paste Corentins command in after any writing that comes up: defaults delete com.microsoft.Outlook*;*killall cfprefsd

    I had same problem with Outlook and I have managed to rebuild identity but the problem is there are several files which starts with com.microsoft.outlook...... in preferences - i don't know which to delete.

    You posted in an old thread. I assume you just installed the 14.5.0 update, is that right?

    The temporary solution is to delete the preferences (a number of other threads explain why).

    You can do so in the Terminal using:

    defaults delete com.microsoft.Outlook*;*killall cfprefsd

    Deleting by hand doesn't purge the preferences from the memory. This is by far the easiest and most reliable way to do so.

    I have the same problem, I was able to rebuild the identity, but I still can't open Outlook.  I tried to delete the preferences, but that did not solve my problem.  This is the message the console gives me:
