Outlook won't open, splash screen comes up briefly and then disappears again and the program quits

My mother's installation of Outlook 2011 has suddenly stopped working.  When she tries to run it, the splash screen comes up briefly (like for about a second or less) and then disappears again and the program quits.  This is all that it does.  It does not display any kind of error message.  It just quits.  There is a file sitting on her Desktop titled Sent Items.mbox and the Get Info window and icon suggest that this file is connected to Outlook.  I assume that this is the file containing her sent emails, but I can’t find where it is supposed to go.

What I am think is that my mom was poking around in folders that she should not have been in an accidentally moved this file out of its correct location and that Outlook, not finding it, is simply quitting.  Is this what is happening?  Can someone tell me where this file is supposed to go?

It might not be on autoupdate yet (no idea what's holding it up).

    I have this same problem, and when I go to Applications/Utilities/Console, I get a whole page of messages that continue to update with the last word "throttling"

    Thank you! I had the same problem. Tried to open Outlook 11, which I have been using on my new Mac Air OS X (10.8.3) and it just would flash the logo and quit. No error message. I  was able to rebuild the identity, though I had to try the option key/launch a few times before it worked. I didn't delete the Outlook preference, do I need to? (FYI, OS X hides the Library/preferences, but I was able to find the following on the net to allow me to see it:

    Fortunately, this is easy to reverse and if you wish you can switch the behavior and instead show Library all the time with a quick terminal command:

    chflags nohidden ~/Library/

    Thank you again for your post. Very helpful! Please let me know if I need to delete the preferences or if it is ok to leave them since Outlook is now working.

    Caitlyn, I can't see any previous post from you on this thread. Is it even the same problem at all?

    From the description here, it looks like a very different situation. COuld you start a new thread for your question, providing as much detail as you can ?

    Hi, I tried all your suggestions and when I do the Console- Launch Outlook, this is what I get. All this started when I was trying to upload contacts into Outlook from a .pst file.
