Hello, I've been getting hundreds of junk emails since hotmail.com changed over to outlook.com. I have been blocking every single one and it has reduced the amount that get through to my inbox however I have a major problem. I cannot block certain emails because outlook doesn't recognise them as email addresses. For example I get junk emails daily from: admin@.__Bouce_dn but I cannot block this address because it starts with @. which outlook doesn't recognise as an address. Please advise!!!!!

Paul

Hello PaulPKlax,

Welcome to Microsoft Community. We are happy to help you with your concern.

We understand that you are having issue with your Microsoft account. You said that you've been getting hundreds of spam emails since your account has been changed to Outlook.com. You also mentioned that you cannot block some of the spam emails because Outlook doesn't recognize them as email address.

There are several ways on how you can block spam emails in your mailbox. Here are some options that you can set up in your account:

Junk mail filter - Selecting Exclusive option. This feature will let you receive emails from your contact list and safe senders list. To set up a junk mail filter to Exclusive, please follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to your Microsoft account.
  2. Click the gear icon located on the upper right panel of your mailbox, just beside your username.
  3. Select More mail settings.
  4. Under Preventing junk email, click on Filters and reporting option.
  5. Under Choose a junk email filter, select Exclusive.
  6. Click the Save button.

Email rules - You can set up email rules to filter incoming emails to automatically delete them and not getting them in your Inbox. If you want to create an email rule to delete emails coming from an email address, kindly refer to these steps:

  1. Sign in to your Microsoft account.
  2. Click the gear icon located on the upper right panel of your mailbox, just beside your username.
  3. Select More mail settings.
  4. Under Customizing Outlook, click the Rules for sorting new messages option.
  5. Click the New button.
  6. Under Step 1: Which messages do you want this rule to apply to?

On the first box with drop down list, select the Sender's address and in the second box with drop down list, select yes.

  1. On the third box, type sender's email address. You may select any option that you want to use at first, second and third box depending on your preference.
  2. Under Step 2: What action do you want to apply? Select Delete these messages.
  3. Click the Save button.

Blocked senders list - You can add email address/es or domain/s in this list to stop receiving emails from them. You also need to delete them from your contact list and safe senders list as well. Here's how?

  1. Sign in to your Microsoft account.
  2. Click the gear icon located on the upper right panel of your mailbox, just beside your username.
  3. Select More mail settings.
  4. Under “Preventing junk email”, click the Safe and blocked senders option.
  5. Click Blocked senders.
  6. In the Blocked email address or domain box, type the email address of the sender or the domain that you want to block, and then click Add to list.

Sweep features - Sweeping emails for deletion. By using Sweep feature it will clean up all the email from a folder and selected users specially emails from spammers. How to use Sweep feature?

  1. Log in to your Microsoft account.
  2. Check the email that that you received from spammers.
  3. On the top of your mailbox user interface click "Sweep."
  4. Once you click "Sweep," select "Delete all from."
  5. Check the small box that stating "Also block future messages."
  6. Click 'Delete all."

All the emails from the spammer will be automatically deleted and it will go directly to your deleted folder.

We hope that those steps will help. If your issue was not fixed, please reply to this message, so we can continue to support you.

Regards,

Carissa J.

Microsoft must be able to stop this tirade.  It didn't happen in Hotmail.  It doesn't happen in my Rocketmail (Yahoo).  Perhaps MS should ask Yahoo how it's done.

This is the same problem I am having and it is getting worse. These advertising emails can't be blocked and the rules to automatically delete them can't work either because the addresses are not recognised by Microsoft as email addresses. How do they get into my Junk box in the first place if they are not genuine email addresses? And how do they benefit the advertisers if they cannot be replied to in the first place. This seems like a waste of everyone's time. They are just annoying and would never tempt anyone to partake of the services they claim to represent. I actually contacted Vanquish credit cards separately to complain, and they said they cannot stop other agencies from contacting people in this way. What is the point? This does not bode well for Microsoft security when they cannot prevent advertisers getting their cold-call adverts through into our private email accounts. This is unacceptable.

i also find Outlook much slower and can't seem to link my other email accounts to it like i had in Hotmail (shows up as linked but doesn't show my email), anyway, i'm a volunteer with the "is this spam" program,. faithfully reported phishing scams so other people (like seniors) don't fall for it, report all fake emails from banks, finance companies, IRS, FBI, etc. to the real companies, but now, due to these unblockable junk emails i have to report them as phishing as it seems to be the only way to stop them. i know it'sa sort of abuse of the phishing reporting system but it seems i'm left with no choice, i may have to use one of my other accounts but my Hotmail (Outlook) is my main account that i and my friends and acquaintances use, so i'd rather not, but the way things are going......

Wow, Microsoft are absolutely NOWHERE on this!

If Outlook.Live simply won't let me add a SPAM email address to the Blocked Senders List, then the entire Junk Email capability is rendered UTTERLY USELESS!

MS respondents, PLEASE read our complaints carefully (see my screenshots below) and instead of pasting a scripted response from your crib sheets, think about a specific, bespoke reply to this widespread problem that is crippling confidence in your service and brand.

I have been paying for 2 different outlook.com email accounts for over 5 years and I'm going to take this a step further in saying that Outlook.com has become absolutely useless to me.  What appears to be happening to me is Microsoft has simply given up on this product and shipped it's development and management over to India where these people really don't care about the usefulness of an email inbox.  My idea of usefulness is a feature set that allows the blocking of an entire domain (doesn't work in outlook.com), blocking even an email address (doesn't work in outlook.com), and many other featuresTHAT I PAY FOR.  My idea of usefulness is NOT having to sift through hundreds of emails everyday (i don't sign up for crap on the web, only my bill pay stuff so where all this junk email is now coming from I have no clue) and trying to determine what is good email and what is bad email only to block the bad and it keep appearing either the same day or the next and you have to start all over again.

Couple that with the fact that Microsoft xBox billing is out of control over there in respect to multiple charges for the same thing and Microsoft not doing anything about it.  I purchased an $11.99 product for my son 3 weeks ago and then about 4 days later I received an email notification from my credit card company saying I was reaching my limit on a card with no previous balance and a $5000 credit limit.  Guess how many times Microsoft charged my card for that $11.99 transaction?  400+ times!  Trying to  get in touch with Microsoft these days (any day) is like trying to get ahold of the IRS on April 15th, ain't happening.  So much to my dismay, this is the 3rd credit card I've had to claim fraud on with Microsoft and cancel because they won't do anything about it themselves.

I'm done with Microsoft personal products and unfortunately because I am an experienced MCSE supporting their business products, I can't do anything about that or I would nix that as well.

Microsoft, pay attention to your customers and do something about the problems you're causing for everyone!!!
