Hello, I've been getting hundreds of junk emails since hotmail.com changed over to outlook.com. I have been blocking every single one and it has reduced the amount that get through to my inbox however I have a major problem. I cannot block certain emails because outlook doesn't recognise them as email addresses. For example I get junk emails daily from: admin@.__Bouce_dn but I cannot block this address because it starts with @. which outlook doesn't recognise as an address. Please advise!!!!!

Paul

Hello PaulPKlax,

Welcome to Microsoft Community. We are happy to help you with your concern.

We understand that you are having issue with your Microsoft account. You said that you've been getting hundreds of spam emails since your account has been changed to Outlook.com. You also mentioned that you cannot block some of the spam emails because Outlook doesn't recognize them as email address.

There are several ways on how you can block spam emails in your mailbox. Here are some options that you can set up in your account:

Junk mail filter - Selecting Exclusive option. This feature will let you receive emails from your contact list and safe senders list. To set up a junk mail filter to Exclusive, please follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to your Microsoft account.
  2. Click the gear icon located on the upper right panel of your mailbox, just beside your username.
  3. Select More mail settings.
  4. Under Preventing junk email, click on Filters and reporting option.
  5. Under Choose a junk email filter, select Exclusive.
  6. Click the Save button.

Email rules - You can set up email rules to filter incoming emails to automatically delete them and not getting them in your Inbox. If you want to create an email rule to delete emails coming from an email address, kindly refer to these steps:

  1. Sign in to your Microsoft account.
  2. Click the gear icon located on the upper right panel of your mailbox, just beside your username.
  3. Select More mail settings.
  4. Under Customizing Outlook, click the Rules for sorting new messages option.
  5. Click the New button.
  6. Under Step 1: Which messages do you want this rule to apply to?

On the first box with drop down list, select the Sender's address and in the second box with drop down list, select yes.

  1. On the third box, type sender's email address. You may select any option that you want to use at first, second and third box depending on your preference.
  2. Under Step 2: What action do you want to apply? Select Delete these messages.
  3. Click the Save button.

Blocked senders list - You can add email address/es or domain/s in this list to stop receiving emails from them. You also need to delete them from your contact list and safe senders list as well. Here's how?

  1. Sign in to your Microsoft account.
  2. Click the gear icon located on the upper right panel of your mailbox, just beside your username.
  3. Select More mail settings.
  4. Under “Preventing junk email”, click the Safe and blocked senders option.
  5. Click Blocked senders.
  6. In the Blocked email address or domain box, type the email address of the sender or the domain that you want to block, and then click Add to list.

Sweep features - Sweeping emails for deletion. By using Sweep feature it will clean up all the email from a folder and selected users specially emails from spammers. How to use Sweep feature?

  1. Log in to your Microsoft account.
  2. Check the email that that you received from spammers.
  3. On the top of your mailbox user interface click "Sweep."
  4. Once you click "Sweep," select "Delete all from."
  5. Check the small box that stating "Also block future messages."
  6. Click 'Delete all."

All the emails from the spammer will be automatically deleted and it will go directly to your deleted folder.

We hope that those steps will help. If your issue was not fixed, please reply to this message, so we can continue to support you.

Carissa J.

Paul, I right click on the offending message and then select "Junk" and then pick your best shot.  (This is using the desktop Outlook program, not the web Outlook.

i'm wondering if perhaps something is being done about it already, i've only gotten 2 of the <  emails in the last 12 hours, normally i would have gotten about 20 or more by now.

*never mind, they're flooding in again now, got about ten more in the last half hour, guess the spammers sleep in on Saturdays.....

    Hello,

I too have been experiencing the very same problems as described over the many posts on thread.

I believe there is a simple reason why Microsoft is not resolving this issue....

    Its about money as always...

There are now many third party spam filters you can purchase for a modest fee..... Some of these are "Microsoft Gold Partners"

Basically why would Microsoft solve issues that force us to search and pay extra for these third party add ons . I can imagine that they are quite happy to make some extra profit by artificially creating the problem and then charging extra for the solution or as I suspect charging third party companies/individuals for the "gold Partner" status...

Basic immoral business practice 101..... The only way to affect it is to leave and seek better alternatives, or indeed go along with Microsoft's strategy and pay for an add on...

    Gloomy, cynical and true

I been having the same problem mostly from a specific company called Pollution Controls who has a fake address on Andover Street in Peabody MA. The only site that seemed to know what is going on is http://www.thedailyscam.com/april-13-2016/  Lower right hand corner of their home page.

I started with this thread and the common approach here seems to be to create a rule to block to be specific names using a rule. Problem is that spammers use names that are also common in many of my real email. The other problem with these fake email address email is that they tend to hang up Hotmail email when it it downloading into my MS Outlook 2016 for one to three minutes.  So with a paid subscription for MS Office I started up the chain of people in overseas call centers. One who did nnot know the difference between Outlook.com and MS Outlook 2016 hung up on me. The next person left me waiting 40 minutes on hold before I hung up. The next one I reach set up an appointment for me to call back to reach a third level technician. However they did not call me back and I had to call them. When I reached the technician, I ask for him to block any email that did not have a real email address. What he did was to raise the Spam filters which is now causing about ever 5th email to go into the junk box. this process took about 5.5 hours. The illness is worse than the disease and I probably should not have even tried with MS.

Apparently Microsoft has no programmers who are able to set up a filter at their end or to provide us with a basic app that would allow us to block all email that does not have a real email address before it gets to our account.  Now I am beginning to receive endless email from this forum that seems to suggest solutions far beyond my technical expertise or that Microsoft is not able to a basic spam issue. This should be insulting to MS since they are suppose to be at the forefront of fighting Spam yet have no solutions.

Microsoft, please help us out here who have work to do and do not want to spend our lives being computer junkies. PLEASE.....................................!
