UPDATED: Play Animated 3D Models in Word, PowerPoint, and *Excel*

Hey Insiders!

My name is Aimee, and I'm a PM in the Office Graphics team. I’m excited to announce support for animated 3D models in PowerPoint, Word and Excel on both Mac and Windows PC. This new media type can help you get creative, elevate storytelling and build highly immersive documents. To get you started, we've created a library of over 50 animated models available in Office. Enjoy :)

Support for animated 3D models is rolled out to Office 365 Subscribers on:

- PowerPoint and Word on Windows PC: Version 1809 (Build 16.0.102827)

  • Excel on Windows PC: Version 1904 (Build 16.0.11526)
  • PowerPoint/Word/Excel on macOS: Build 16.24.226

This feature is not available on Office Perpetual, namely Office 2019 or 2016. 

Getting Started

STEP 1

Firstly, you'll need to insert an animated model.

Navigate to Insert Tab > 3D Models > From Online Sourcesto peruse Office's library of 3D models.

In the dialogue box, click the All Animated Models category. Insert any that catches your eye. There's novel characters, education-focused examples, realistic animals and many more to pick from:

Tip: All animated models are badged with the ‘running man’ to easily identify:

Alternatively, insert your own animated model if you have one, via the Insert Tab > 3D Models > From File .

Office accepts .gltf and .fbx formats for animated models. Currently only skeletal animations are supported, with morph and node animation support coming very soon. Let us know via Send a Smile in the Office app if there are any issues with your insert.

STEP 2

Your inserted model will now animate in the editor!

STEP 3

To Play/Pause the animation, right-click on the model and select Play/Pause on the Floatie:

STEP 4

Animated models can have multiple animation scenes. To explore these, select the model and navigate to the Format Tab > Scenes:

    I wish MS would title this propaganda fully. The feature is not being added to all versions of Office 2019/2016 (as you state in the body). So PLEASE, when you make news releases like this include the qualifier 365 in the title. 

    And don't tell me it couldn't be given to one-time pay licenses. Over the last 2 weeks I've seen 3 unwanted (by me at least) (dis)"improvements" to my Office 2016 one-time pay:

    • phat spacing in outlook to/from/CC input fields
    • the new application icons
    • new look in file > open pane

    Your programmers can be selective about some new features but not others? Naw, it is just laziness.

    I have a strong philosophical objection to the "feature divide" between the 365 extortion and one time pay licenses.  Giving 365 things like OneDrive space, Skype time, Teams, Flow, Mix ... whole applications is fine by me. That has always been the way Office bundles have been differentiated.  But I was around before the Office bundle came out. Beside the price advantage of the bundle that sold it to the bean counters the BEST thing about the Office bundle was that it did away with the features for price divide, the "Standard" vs "Pro" features for money split.  When Office was introduced a user could buy Office Home and Student and have exactly the same features as they had in the Office Business bundle they used at work. They could use their H&S at home and school / night school to learn the new features that their bosses were too cheap to pay for them to learn.  The 365 feature split broke 25 years of marketing. It was a real shame.

    How do I tell if I am 2019 vs. Office 365? Can't you tell from the PowerPoint version?

    And just to make sure, you do have an active Office 365 subscription, and aren't using Office 2016 or Office 2019?

    I'm on 16.25 build 19051201

    I can load 3d models no problem and move them around, there seems to be no way however to have them use their custom animation (I can use the basic animations that come with PowerPoint).

    What version and build of Office do you have installed currently? You can find out by going to the PowerPoint > About PowerPoint, and looking for the line that reads "16.xx (xxxxxx)."
