Can't connect Bluetooth headset to Android Teams

This seems to be an ongoing issue. I have a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. Until recently I had no problems connecting my Bluetooth headphones. Now I cannot. My AKG, NuraTrue, Sony wh1000mx5. All fail. I cannot find any setting in my phone app that allows me to choose my headset like the pc application does.

This appears to be an issue with MS Teams, not user error, device connectivity, etc.

I have tried the following advice previously posted without success.

  • Clearing the cache of your Android phone's Teams app by signing out and closing the Teams App. Then go to Phone Settings > Apps & Notifications > Teams > Storage & Cache > Clear Storage and Clear Cache and confirm your action. After that, please re-open the Teams App and sign in again to see if it makes a difference.
  • Unpair the device from Bluetooth devices (Forget devices), then reconnect.
  • Updating to the latest version of Teams for Android phones should resolve the issue, and Bluetooth should work properly with both devices

Please provide advice on how I can fix this issue. It is critical for my work.

TIA

Hi NatashaGoode,

You may try the other options below. Hope that one of the solutions will solve the issue.

  1. Check also the apps permission on your phone like camera, microphone and also nearby devices.

Go to Settings -> Apps -> Teams -> Permissions -> Allow access to "Nearby devices"

  1. Try to connect with your bluetooth device first before you open the Teams.

Please let me know if this doesn't work or if you need further assistance.

Thank you.

I am a developer that work on audio technologies for smartphone, so I have Android phones from every major phone maker, i.e., Samsung, Xiaomi, Moto, Google, etc... This issue happens with EVERYONE with them, so it's not a brand issue nor issue with the Bluetooth accessories. USB-C headset does not have this issue.

This issue started when Teams started to require "Nearby devices" permission for Bluetooth audio device late last year, just before this thread was created. I granted it access but it sporadically does not work - most times do not work. It used to work but the issue was introduced when the "Nearby devices" requirement was added.

Speaking purely from privacy concerns, Microsoft has NOT given us any valid reason why it needs "Nearby devices" access. Every other audio and VoIP app can support Bluetooth without such requirement. I guess Teams wants to use Bluetooth to scan nearby Teams Room audio devices but it creates the problem for everyone else, both in privacy concern and now that it doesn't seem to work... "Nearby devices" usually use BLE beacon function, so this is a form of location tracking of user... Serious security and privacy implications.

Please escalate this to your developer and fix this!!

    Jo Joanna

Already tried those options without success. My Bluetooth headsets are operational and work on other devices without issues. Given that the connectivity has suddenly ceased, I thought it was a Teams update issue. The weird thing is that even when my phone is connected in my car, I can only use the phone speakers, yet the Teams notifications sound through my vehicle sound system.

Why can't I choose the device I use in the Teams phone application like I can on the PC?

    Hi again

Thank you, solution #2 solved my issue. For some reason when my Teams phone app updated it disabled "nearby devices" access. This has been doing my head in for a couple of weeks!

Might be worth disseminating that as a FAQ for a quick Google search. There are so many people finding the same issue. I'm sure it's just one of those quirks when an app updates, but it's very helpful to know.

    Have a great day :)

My permissions are granted for Microphone, Music and Audio, Nearby Devices, Phone and Photos and Videos. When I enabled the Music and Audio permission, I received a warning "This app does not support the latest version of Android" ... I'm using a Pixel 6 Pro running Android 13. All other conferencing apps work fine with bluetooth headset, Microsoft Teams is the only one that refuses to work over Bluetooth.

    I have uninstalled and re-installed

    I have cleared the cache

I have connected bluetooth BEFORE launching teams
