Audio not coming through Bluetooth Headset

Seemingly randomly, Teams will not output audio through my Bluetooth headset (microphone will consistently work). The only way that I have found to fix it is to restart my computer. This problem is specifically with Teams, system sounds, browser sounds, and Zoom calls will all give audio to the headset, even if teams is not. I am able to see my headset in device settings in Teams and can select it. If I change the audio to output through my laptop speakers, I am able to hear audio.

Some troubleshooting I have tried:

  • Swap around audio devices within Teams
  • Disconnect Headset from laptop
  • Ensure Headset is forgotten from laptop
  • Restart Laptop (This will always fix the issue for an unspecified amount of time

The Bluetooth headset that I am using is Steel Series Artic 9. I can consistently get this headset to work with other Bluetooth devices, such as my personal PC, my wife and my phones, my wife's laptop. So the issue seems to specifically be teams on my work laptop.

Here are 2 examples on when I have seen the issue pop up.

  1. Connected for my first Teams meeting in the morning, audio worked fine. Joined a new meeting 1 hour later and there was no audio. The headset did no disconnect, and was left on until the next meeting.
  2. I put my laptop to sleep when I am not working (been turning it off the past week) when I wake the laptop when I begin work again, the headset will not have audio through teams. This is random as some days it would work and others it would not.

Disabling the 'Intel Smart Sound Technology for Bluetooth Audio' under Sound, video and game controllers fixed this audio issue for me. I didn't need to restart FYI.

I have the same problem with a Sennheiser headset, but over the years got the same problems too with Samsung buds.

Microphone from the Headset will work, audio will not, even though the Audio output is selected to Bluetooth. 9 meetings out of 10, since the Teams became: 'New Teams' I have to divert the audio through the speakers, or restart the laptop and or Teams 100 times to get it working. Youtube music, or a browser always works.

Dear Microsoft, this is clearly a bug, asking people to restart, or reconnect, or install newer Bluetooth drivers is clearly not good advice, if the audio works in applications other than Teams, it is clearly and obviously a bug in Teams.

Instead, why can you cannot create an issue in your bug list and get the developers to take a look instead of wasting peoples time updating stuff and reconnecting.

You keep adding lots of new features to Teams, yet something as basic as audio working reliably is getting neglected, it should be an MVP feature, audio and or video calls is the actual selling point function of Teams after all.

I would rather you stopped making new features and just fixed the bugs instead.

Disabling Intel Smart Sound Technology for Bluetooth doesn't resolve the issue. Specifically, my Bluetooth speakers aren't working with MSTeams during calls. However, after ending the call, everything goes back to normal and all other apps play sounds through my speakers correctly. I regularly update Microsoft Teams, and I didn't encounter these Bluetooth speaker problems a week or two ago.

At some point, one specific headset actually worked the entire day.
The other headsets worked only once, and then the mic didn't work until I rebooted.
This changed two weeks ago with one of the updates to Teams/drivers.

Tried disabling the Intel Smart Sound Technology and it didn't work...

    Amazing. Almost six months...

I had the issue that only my Bluetooth headset did not work !!

So what helped me ( I am on windows 11)
After trying bunch of other stuff I did following:

Went to Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft Teams.
I tried repair, terminate, and all other options, none worked.

What did work is after I hit Reset option, clearing all the settings and app data ...

    I have Bose QC45.

    Hope it helps someone.
I am utterly disappointed with MS and ability for them to reply, but hey...

P.S. I would submit screenshot, but cant upload image ... tried png, and jpg...
