Audio not coming through Bluetooth Headset

Seemingly randomly, Teams will not output audio through my Bluetooth headset (microphone will consistently work). The only way that I have found to fix it is to restart my computer. This problem is specifically with Teams, system sounds, browser sounds, and Zoom calls will all give audio to the headset, even if teams is not. I am able to see my headset in device settings in Teams and can select it. If I change the audio to output through my laptop speakers, I am able to hear audio.

Some troubleshooting I have tried:

  • Swap around audio devices within Teams
  • Disconnect Headset from laptop
  • Ensure Headset is forgotten from laptop
  • Restart Laptop (This will always fix the issue for an unspecified amount of time

The Bluetooth headset that I am using is Steel Series Artic 9. I can consistently get this headset to work with other Bluetooth devices, such as my personal PC, my wife and my phones, my wife's laptop. So the issue seems to specifically be teams on my work laptop.

Here are 2 examples on when I have seen the issue pop up.

  1. Connected for my first Teams meeting in the morning, audio worked fine. Joined a new meeting 1 hour later and there was no audio. The headset did no disconnect, and was left on until the next meeting.
  2. I put my laptop to sleep when I am not working (been turning it off the past week) when I wake the laptop when I begin work again, the headset will not have audio through teams. This is random as some days it would work and others it would not.

Yes, sadly I think you are correct. My bluetooth devices work with every other app other than Teams but the "fix" seems to be re-insstall bluetooth drives, devices, re-boot, etc. It's nothing to do with the device if it's working with every other app. It's an issue with Teams and it isn't being acknowledged or addressed.

I have this same problem with Plantronics Voyager headset or other bluetooth headsets. Many others at my company also have this issue. We are getting accustomed to people having "headset issues" on a daily basis. Usually one party on a meeting can't hear or be heard while everyone else on the call has no audio issues. We use Teams for meetings and most people have the Plantronics Voyager bluetooth headset as "standard" but many people bring-their-own and it happens to them as well. We use Dell laptops or Microsoft Surface tablets. The common denominator is Teams with bluetooth. Today, my headset worked during a recorded meeting, but I am trying to review the recording of the meeting and it will not play audio over my headset while I can hear it if I select the laptop speakers.

Please offer a permanent fix; it is frustrating for us and rebooting during meetings is a waste of time and money.

I have the same annoying problem with Plantronics Focus Voyager headset.

I noticed that it happens mostly after a power down / power up of the headset.

I happens only in Teams and only sound output is affected, microphone works (other participants are hearing me).

I already upgraded bluetooth drivers, audio headset firmware and I use the latest version of Teams (1.6.00.11166 (64 bits)).

The headset is working in other applications even when the problem appears in Teams.

BT unpeering/peering the headset does not recover.

    It's a real pitty.

In fact, to be able to use my wireless headset under Teams, I had to switch to the dedicated usb dongle which forgives me to have the headset simultaneously connected to the smartphone.

It looks like Microsoft does not take care of its clients and prefers to sell Office 365 licenses rather to solve technical problems.

    Yes that's my conclusion.

I've decided just to use wired headphones for now - can't be bothered dealing with this with workarounds etc - hopefully there will be a proper MS fix in the future.

    Thanks
