New Teams is not allowing Outlook to display contact status.
If I turn Off "Try the new Teams" and go back to old Teams, then Outlook starts showing contact status.

Here is a potential fix. From the below article about fixing Presence in Outlook it mentions to manually set the registry to "Teams"

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\IM Providers

  • Name: DefaultIMApp
  • Type: REG_SZ
  • Data: Teams

Check your registry, but in my case, I has two entries under IM Providers, so I changed the Data from 'Teams' to 'MsTeams' and that fixed the problem.

I got presence/status working with Outlook 365 (not the new version).

In Teams I had to click on my picture/account in the top right and then click "Sign Out". Then when I signed back into Teams my status started working.

    Just an additional note: When I click "Try New Outlook" top right my current "classic" Outlook - I immediately see the presence/status of all my colleagues. My classic Outlook does not show anything. The New Outlook is despicably bad. Most of the classic features is not available in the new Outlook. A simple thing like copy and paste a mail inside another mail is not available. And no PST support. So that is a NO GO! I have tried everything, even edited registry entries - but no luck. What is interesting is that in classic Oulook Under File->Options->People the "Display online status next to name" is greyed out. And YES I have set Teams to be the default IM Chat.

    FIXED!

    I had this issue months ago and decided to go back to the "old" Teams version, but ended up getting an email that my organization was switching to the "new" teams so went ahead and installed it (primarily because of ton of low performance issues).

    The presence issue showed up again and I dismissed it for a few days but now it's just not something I can work without.

    Found out that installing the "Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant" was successful for some people, so I gave it try. You can download from here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/about-the-microsoft-support-and-recovery-assistant-e90bb691-c2a7-4697-a94f-88836856c72f

    I selected the app that I had issues with and the type of issue (presence with Teams / Outlook was actually there). The assistance took a few seconds and then asked me to provide feeback if it worked or not. Note that I shutdown both Teams and Outlook apps before I run the program (including the related apps in the tray).

    Now I can see my coworker status in Outlook with the new Teams ;)
