Show Background effects option has disappeared on teams application, how can I get it back?

I had the option to turn on "show background effects" during a MS teams meeting.  It was working great.  Then one day the option is gone and all I can do is turn on blur.  But other users in my company are able to use the feature.  I logged into a Staging tenant to test and the option is there but when I go to  my Companies production tenant it is not available.  But it is for other users.  Microsoft has not rolled out any MS Teams controls around the background so not sure how my setting is missing and others have it.

%appdata% should take you to Roaming.  The full path would be:

C:\Users<userid>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Teams

We could figure out which files are making the feature available again.

You have just to copy:

  • desktop-config.json
  • settings.json
  • storage.json

You can proceed as follows:

  1. Close MS Teams completely
  2. Copy the above listed files from a machine of someone who has the feature working (%Appdata%\Microsoft\Teams or C:\Users<userid>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Teams)
  3. Paste the copied files in your %AppData%\Microsoft\Teams and replace the existing files
  4. Start MS Teams and wait until you got an error message where you can click on "Sign out"
  5. Log-in with your email address

    Hi, thanks for the response. This is not the case in my situation.  The feature was rolled out to our tenant and it was working on my computer.  Then one day the feature was gone.  My other co-workers have the feature.  Also, if I go to another computer the feature is there and works.  It is not working on my current work laptop.  I was looking for some assistance on how to fix on the local client.  I have removed Teams and re-installed it and the same result.  No Backgrounds.

    I have a ticket open with Microsoft support that is going now where, but I did find a work around.  

    If you copy the Teams folder (%appdata%\Microsoft\Teams) from the machine of someone who has the feautre (or from where you logged into another machine and had the feature) to the machine that is not working, the feature comes back.  Make sure Teams and Outlook (because of the add-in) are both closed when you copy the folder over.  

    I have also found that if you (back it up first) delete this Teams folder and let it re-build auomatically, the feature will go missing again (which sounds like the scenario many are describing).

    I have the same problem for a particular user. She used to have blur background, but now the ability to change the background (even blur it) has disappeared completely.

    This happens whether she is using her Mac or a Windows Surface device, whether she is using the browser or desktop app, whether the meeting is 'Meet now' in chat or a scheduled Teams meeting. All of her policy settings are the same as for other members of staff. She is a teacher and really needs to be able to hide her background. Is there some Microsoft documentation that specifies how and when 'change background' is available? I would really like to help her with this. Thank you.

    Same issue for me. Background effects working on my laptop, not my PC. All on the same version. Very annoying!!
