Loud Beeping when Muted in a MS Teams Call

When using my Aftershokz OpenComm during a call, I hear a loud beeping noise when I mute myself during the call. This beeping only goes away when I unmute. I've contacted Aftershokz, and they've assured me this is due to a recent MS Teams update causing connectivity issues.

I've also read other non-Microsoft forums and realize this is apparently an issue since 2021 with MS Teams and multiple brands of headphones/headsets. However, it only recently started for me today, April 18, 2022.

Is Microsoft doing anything to solve this issue? Is there a solution to this?

It seems to be making many users upset and frustrated. I'm surprised Microsoft hasn't addressed this yet.

The issue this issue happens on using Teams desktop client not the Teams web client.
However it isn't practical to use the web client for call where you're likely to need to mute.

when i press the mute button in teams it mutes the headset properties also. If i disable the headset being muted then the beep goes away. This disabling the mic in both teams and windows is causing the beep sound. Here are example pictures

    Pressed mute in teams

If you click the speaker icon in the picture above you will still be muted in teams but the double beep will go away

This issue is being caused by clicking mute in teams and would likely affect many sound devices. The most likely cause of this beep issue is that the wrong function is being used to to mute the headset. The function being used is muting the device to all of windows rather than just to teams. This is incorrect regardless as teams should only mute input to itself and not all of windows. The double beep is likely a result of a check in teams for a mic, and when it no longer discovers a mic because it muted the mic in windows, it gives the double beep no mic found warning.

TRY teams webclient as i did.

Than i've closed webclient and opened again the Teams app the issue is no more present even if i've muted unmuted hundred of time

I'll give it a try next time.

Given that we pay money both for Windows and Microsoft 365 subscriptions there shouldn't need to be a workaround for basic stuff like call audio!

It worked for me too, but once I muted again in the same conference call, it started the beeping again.

I use Sennheiser headset (HD 350BT) and not using any parallel application for real (Outlook is opened, also Excel or Word, but nothing special).

    Same headset, same issue.

If I disconnect and reconnect during the call I get rid of the beep until I need to unmute myself to talk. Going back to muted brings back the beeps.

I'm beginning to get headaches during Teams meetings.

I wrote to Sennheiser about this, got this response:

In regards to your request, we would like to let you know the following information:

The HD 350/450 BT not have mute control functions built into the headphones. When the mute switch is toggled in Teams, the computer sends a control signal to the headphones from the Bluetooth transmitter which causes the double beep. The headphones cannot ignore this signal, so the only solution is to prevent the computer from sending the signal.

The signal is not present in all versions of the Teams App- ensuring that you are on the latest OS version and that your Teams/zoom are updated may resolve the issue.

This signal is not present in the web based version of Teams- launching the Web version of the meeting will also resolve the issue.

If the user wants to use the Teams app with the HD 350/450 BT, they can use the computers Sound settings to disable the microphone rather than the mute switch in Teams, which prevents the signal from being generated. There are 2 ways to do this, with instructions outlined below.

There are 2 things to keep in mind-

    1. The computer may try to use a secondary microphone, like a webcam. If this happens, disable that microphone as well.

    2. Teams will say that it has lost connection with the microphone. Use the X in the corner of the dialog box to close the notification. Do not choose "call me back", which will drop you from the call. A. Use the Sounds Control Panel

    1. Right click the Speaker icon in the lower right hand corner of Windows Home screen (default)
    2. Left Click on Sounds, which pops up the Sound Control Panel
    3. Select the Recording Tab
    4. Right click the Headset entry of the HD 350/450 BT
    5. Disable or Enable the headset microphone

    B. Use the Sound Settings Menu

    1. Select Settings by right clicking the Windows icon in the bottom left corner of the Windows Home Screen (default)
    2. In the Input section, click "Device Properties and Test Microphone"
    3. Check or uncheck "Disable" to turn microphone on or off.

    Sincerely,

Your Sennheiser Consumer Audio Customer Support
