I am on Windows 10 on an HP laptop and my audio for Microsoft Teams keep cutting off every now and then. It comes back on, it goes back off. I would say it does it for 15 seconds and then I get a minute of a good audio. The video works fine too, but there's no audio while the video shows the person is clearly talking.

Hi All,

This is Alan Wu from Microsoft Office 365 forum team.

I am very glad to have this chance to reply here. Well, for teams audio related issue, I believe dear customers may try the following suggestions:

  1. Check the band width which has been stated clearly in Prepare your organization's network for Teams - Microsoft Teams | Microsoft Docs.
  2. Make sure your driver and audio device are workable. For more information, you can refer to My microphone isn't working in Teams - Office Support (microsoft.com).
  3. Update your Teams client to the latest version.
  4. Isolate it is not the recipient side issue. I mean, supposing you are having a Teams call with another user and got this problem, please make sure the issue is not coming from that user's side.

At last, dear customers, as the similar/same issue may be caused via different factors since your environment like OS, client version, network, etc are different. I suggest our dear customers who are having the issue can post a new thread in our forum so that our engineers can better handle it. Here we can avoid some confusion from the original post. Thanks for all very much.

Regards,

Alan

[Update] Ignore all that I said below regarding audio drivers. I noticed exactly the same issue while using Zoom. The real issue turned out to be WiFi. Even though the WiFi speed showed a respectable 30-40Mbps, switching to Ethernet solved the issue forever.

Ignore the part below:

I had the same issue and was able to solve it after some investigation. In my case, the cause boiled down to an audio driver that my Samsung PnP monitor (used as extended screen) was installing. Somehow Teams allowed itself interference from this audio driver, even though it was not selected in Teams settings. Here are the steps I would recommend, especially if you are using an external screen / microphone / webcam etc.:

  1. Go to Control Panel > Device Manager
  2. Expand Audio inputs and outputs
  3. Right click the audio driver(s) that you do not use, and click Uninstall.

(Just disabling did not make the problem go away; uninstalling was required.)

Now the problem should go away. If you detach and reattach the monitor / device to your laptop, the audio driver will show up again, and you will need to uninstall it again.

TIP: If you are not sure which audio driver is being installed by your monitor / device, physically disconnect that device, open Device Manager and then plug in the device. You will see the Device Manager refresh and the new audio driver that shows up is the one being added by  your monitor / webcam / mic / device.

    Hi,

I have exactly the issue which is described above. for several weeks now and it is very annoying, especially during client virtual communications.

My laptop is a LENOVO P52s Core i7 16GB RAM (powerful desktop machine)

1/ I have this issue and I can say for sure that it is network/location independant:

I have issue in the office when I am connected to the company network

I have the issue with of without being connected to VPN

I have also the issue at home with my personal fiber connection (1Gbits)

2/ the audio goes away for about 10s EXACTLY every 5mn (I recorded this during various TEAMS session and this time never changes. It is always every 5mn)

3/ I do not have htis issue with any other similar application (WEBEX, ...)

4/ it only affects AUDIO flow, not VIDEO flow

5/  My colleagues do NOT have this issue, while I am seing this issue my neighbour did not experience it during the same TEAMS meeting. So it seems only my machine has the issue but it runs the same company applications

The IT department from my company uninstalled and reinstalled TEAMS yesterday but the issue is still there.

So there is definitely an issue related to TEAMS. I looks to me like an audio buffer overflow which resolves itself after 10s .

Please investigate and resolve this issue

    Hi Jennifer,

I am experiencing the same issue, audio completely cuts out at random intervals for 10-20 seconds at a time. It is severely impacting my ability to communicate with my team.

I am connected to a stable internet connection; my systems firewall is not the issue (my other team members do not suffer this issue). I am not in any of the situations you listed.

Can you provide a solution to this issue?

    Hello everyone

is there a solution for this issue?
Or any recommendation on how to handle it?

Hi Carlos and everyone else on this thread.   hopefully the following information is helpful for you and your company(ies).

In our internal investigations we were able to determine that this issue happens on Windows 10 PCs that use Realtek audio.

Further profiling revealed that it was (unfortunately) likely caused by an issue with background windows process that attempts to disable the currently installed; known good Realtek vendor drivers to activate an old generic Microsoft driver that is well documented to not work.  It was observed that this activity was not present when MS meetings was closed, but was triggers when the application attempts to enumerate audio devices.  On some system the action was fairly infrequent; but on other system as frequently as every 10 seconds.  Frustrating at any frequency for the end users affected by this.

We surmised that the failed attempt to change the driver momentarily breaks connection to the audio device that MS Teams is using.   Because the applications isn't written in a fashion to re-cycle the interrupted device, it remains broken until the user changes the microphone device to another option and then back again.... only then to be re-broken on the next cycle.

Given that this is an interaction is occurring between two articles of Microsoft software, our engineering team determined that there was a less than 1% chance that it would ever be fixed.  The decision was made that the company would not continue to waste valuable time and resources on trying to find a fix or hold out hope that requests for support from Microsoft would not just fall of deaf ears.  This thread serve only as the documentation rendering that judgement as objectively correct, given that it has been a known issue for approximately a year and Microsoft hasn't acknowledged, attempted or otherwise delivered any form of workaround or solution.

We ultimately solved this issue by:

    1. Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs; uninstall Microsoft Teams.
    2. Visiting the website and installing anyother teleconference solutions.  a non-exhaustive list to choose from here:
      • Zoom
      • Skype
      • Microsoft Teams
      • Cisco Webex Meetings
      • GoToMeeting
      • BlueJeans Meetings
      • Google Hangouts Meet
      • Jabber
      • Jami
      • join.me
      • UberConference
    3. Sending setting auto-responder emails at corporate level such that incoming emails containing Microsoft Teams urls/links are sent indicating that organization doesn't participate in calls using the solutions.

Hopefully that information is helpful.  While the solution wasn't the desired one, it absolutely produces the desired outcome.  We have not experienced any repeat issues with telepresence since performing these steps.
