Recent update to Teams causes beeping in headset when on mute

Been using Teams since the start of lockdown with a headset. As of today I am getting a double-beep at about five second intervals (like a hold beep) in the headset when I am muted. This has not happened before and been using same headset for months.

Also note that when I mute / unmute in Teams, the headset now announces "mute on" and "mute off" to me.

This feels like a Teams update has created this "feature" - please turn it off!

I also have the Aftershokz OpenComm and started getting this behavior after MS Teams updated.

MS Teams isn't causing the beeping, it is the headset. You can prove this by muting the headset microphone in the Windows Sound settings. Same thing happens. I think what Teams changed is that instead of just ignoring the mic, it now synchronizes with the system sound. This would be a good thing, except for the OpenComm trying to deafen me with the beeping noises.

Thanks to ToddAtnip and DavidLopezA for the tip of using a Jabra dongle. I have a "Jabra Link 370") and disabling the Call Control/Softphone Integration in Jabra Direct worked to avoid Teams muting the headset and causing the beep.

That doesn't seem possible given that multiple people have reported that using the web version of Teams does NOT result in the beeping. It also doesn't do it for me (Shokz Aeropex) in any other apps, like Zoom for example.

The annoying beep issue came back... To make matters worse, my previous workaround to mute/unmute from device setting does not work. I had to come up with an even more elaborate workaround this time.... Anyways, here it is.

    1. Right-click the sound icon on the Windows taskbar.
    2. Select Sounds => Headset => Properties=>Levels. You will find mute/unmute button there.
    3. The mute button in #2 is synchronized with MS Teams EXCEPT for 1 condition below.

Mute microphone in Teams then unmute the button found in #2.

    1. You hear “Mute off” from your Aftershokz but your microphone is still muted in MS Teams.

You should keep "Sounds" window open while in Teams meeting so that you can mute your microphone in Teams and stop the beep using the Sounds window. A 2-click solution isn't great, but it is at least better than loud 2 beeps every 10sec!

This problem just started in my office, but it is only occurring on one computer. We tried it on another laptop, and we couldn't replicate it. Both are Lenovos that had updates run this morning. To the early suggestion to use only Teams-approved headsets, that can cause other problems. We went with Shokz OpenComm after spending big money on Teams-approved Poly headsets, only to find out that they caused problems with any other audio program other than Teams.
