Recent update to Teams causes beeping in headset when on mute

Been using Teams since the start of lockdown with a headset. As of today I am getting a double-beep at about five second intervals (like a hold beep) in the headset when I am muted. This has not happened before and been using same headset for months.

Also note that when I mute / unmute in Teams, the headset now announces "mute on" and "mute off" to me.

This feels like a Teams update has created this "feature" - please turn it off!

I've just received the Shokz Bluetooth USB dongle called Loop 100 and thought it might interest you guys.

When you use it the PC doesn't see the headset as Bluetooth headset anymore, it sees it as a sound device.

So yes it's avoiding the infamous beeping sound but it has another great advantage:

When you use your bluetooth headset in hands-free profile (both speakers and mike) on Windows it downgrades the sound quality to 8kHz, allegedly due to the limited Bluetooth bandwidth but I never understood why it's not the case on a phone... 8kHz is good enough for voice but try to listen to music or play a game in this mode, it's really awful.

Now with the Loop 100 I can enjoy both the microphone and the stereo quality at the same time, the dream ! I'm almost happy the beeping sound forced me to buy it I would never have thought it would also do this magic trick.

The Loop 100 is at around $60 (quite expensive for a dongle) but if you ask Shokz nicely they may give you a 25% discount (still a bit expensive but ok'ish).

No idea if this dongle is compatible with non Shokz devices though, I doubt it.

Correction, I got lured by the fact that the dongle is able to switch seamlessly super fast between stereo and hands-free profiles but actually in hands-free the audio quality is super degraded like when connecting to the PC's bluetooth. So the only advantage of the dongle is to avoid the beeping sound. It's still convenient but too expensive for a simple bluetooth dongle.

Using Sennheiser 350 BT. Also getting beeps. Please fix this issue. I don't have time to log in online multiple times a day because Microsoft has created an issue that didn't exist previously.

Thanks for the suggestion Boris, I tried this and tested through it to see if it stops the beeping, which it does... but:

Disabling the gateway essentially removes the Aftershokz microphone from the device microphone selection, defaulting to the PC/laptops' microphone.

So it really doesn't fix the problem... it simply hard-tethers your microphone to the laptop hardware.

I am using shockz and Jabra, every 4 seconds there is beeping to remind me I am mute.

This only happened recently after a recent MS teams update
