Recent update to Teams causes beeping in headset when on mute

Been using Teams since the start of lockdown with a headset. As of today I am getting a double-beep at about five second intervals (like a hold beep) in the headset when I am muted. This has not happened before and been using same headset for months.

Also note that when I mute / unmute in Teams, the headset now announces "mute on" and "mute off" to me.

This feels like a Teams update has created this "feature" - please turn it off!

I can't imagine a universe where a user would want a permanent loud beep while being on mute... it's completely ridiculous...

What works for me (Shokz Opencom) is to not use the headset's microphone but use the webcam's or laptop's or a usb or jack mike instead, in this mode the headset is not used in softphone mode and thus no beeping. It has the advantage of having the headset in stereo mode with a much better sound quality than the awful 8kHz hand's free bluetooth profile.

Of course it's not ideal but it's my prefered workaround for now.

I find it really a shame that this issue has been clearly identified for a couple of months on various headset brands and still no improvement or no "disable softphone mode' option and what I hate the most is the "use a certified headset instead of your $160 bone conduction device" answer...

Agree. This is a software problem, not a hardware problem.

It really is the dumbest excuse to blame it on "non-certified headphones". Obviously this came in after the update as most users report. These are the same idiots(Microsoft) who told me to format and reinstall windows, because gamepass can't install a game. (better than the "solution" to update windows..... if this truly was an issue, then platforms like steam would also have this issue)

Microsoft is very good at producing operating systems and office packages, but they really get there **** kicked by the competition in terms of getting the basics right in some of there applications. They are also very good at providing really dumb "solutions" instead investigating the issue and patching the problem. They have this tendency to deflect issues and brush them off as "update windows fixes"

    Ok that's enough. Ending rant.

Issue with the the "Mute On/Off" and beeping has been fixed! I talked to Shokz (hello [ A T ] shokz [ D O T ] com) and Shokz sent me a small dongle that works with Teams. It's not ideal, I'd rather just use my laptop's native bluetooth functionality (which worked great for years until Microsoft's latest update) but at least I can use my headset again.

    What the Dongle looks like:
